First, we will start with making thumbnails, encompassing the idea of creating layout through art principles. Next, we will establish the content. This is your moment to create something meaningful and hands-on. Once we know the imagery and text to incorporate, we will find the fonts through metal and wood type. We will assemble these letters into words, adjacent to image blocks, and create a design that is truly you. We will set these up in a metal frame called a chase, bring it over to a historically remarkable press, lay on the ink (in any color of your choice), place down the paper, and roll over the work like a big stamp. It's quite tedious, but an incredibly rewarding experience to create art in the same way people have done for decades, even dating back to Colonial times.

I'm a graphic designer and community organizer with a passion for hands-on art skills. I've been well-versed for over 5 years in the printmaking process of letterpress, a centuries-old method to creating anything from posters and broadsides to invitations and books. I received a Masters of Fine Arts degree from Marywood University in 2015 with a concentration in letterpress arts, completing my thesis on the The Graphic Design Techniques and Cultural History of Radical Publications, which was presented in both Boston and Seattle. I have a wide understanding of the historical implications of printing and its affects on democracy, social justice, and independence. I have technical knowledge of the presses within the shop and explain their usages and best methods to design and create a piece of artwork you'll love.

We will be working out of The Workshop on Adams Avenue in Scranton, PA. This creative space is is complete with all the tools and materials we will need. This location is only open for exclusive letterpress workshops (like this!) and monthly art events.

This was a fun experience! We were celebrating three birthdays and we each came prepared with a short quote. Jessica was a great instructor - pleasant, knowledgeable, and very helpful. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a creative group activity.

We went to an Airbnb weekend in the Poconos. 6 families. 12 couples. 6 kids and 5 babies all in one house.
3 of us mamas escaped this very fun yet hectic house, to a wonderful 3 hour workshop getaway, where we traveled back in time to make LetterPress Posters.
We walked in to see stacks of 100 year old Letter Press trays, with free range to use all of them.
I manage a STEM Center for a living, and teach making. I enjoyed this workshop so much, this is literally the first review I’ve ever left on an Airbnb workshop. Jessica welcomed us to the space, and
guided us through the process wonderfully, giving design advice, and practical advise on how to pull this off.
Making a Letter Press Poster in 3 hours is a very challenging task.
I recommend coming with a quote or a general idea at mind.
