We deliver this experience on our working honey farm and this is a true hands on experience to share with you the process of being a beekeeper and how we produce some of the best honey in the World.
We have around 200 operational hives with up to 50000 resident bees per hive at any given time.
You will be suited up in a beekeeping outfit and then head out to the hives to learn and see what happens inside the hive.
We will share with you the workings of an operational productive hive, see the smoking process, open their home and check out the busy bees doing their thing. We will look out for the Queen Bee and the different stages of development.
You will get a great insight as to what they do with Honey, Pollen and Propolis within the hive, hold a frame of bees and touch the honeycomb. This is great photo opportunity!
Once we conclude the tour we will head to our shed where you will see the how the extraction process is set up and observe how it works, then taste some of the best honey in the world! We have up to six varieties and you will be able to try them all!
This is a fun, educational and unique experience where you will learn about these magnificent creatures!
This is a Family friendly experience and children are welcome as long as they are 110 cm tall and have a paying Adult with them.
Other things to note
Please dont wear perfume or strong deodorant as this can make bees a little upset.
This experience is not suitable for individuals who have high allergic reactions to bees, although the risk is very low.
A risk and liability waiver form will need to be signed on arrival.

I have lived on Kangaroo Island for the last 20 years and have always had a passion for getting outdoors and enjoying open spaces. I started as a beekeeper when I moved to the island as a hobby, and have loved every minute of it. It all started with one hive as part of being self sufficient and sustainable living. Once I realised just how amazing bees are, their need in the environment and the products that they produce - I started my journey to became a commercial bee keeper and now sell our Honey, Beeswax and Propolis around Australia.

We had an incredible experience on this bee keeping tour with Shaun. Shaun is incredibly passionate and knowledgeable about what he does and he is renowned for his beekeeping on the Island (many locals recommended his bee farm). He cares a lot about the bees and the natural environment and ensures that all of his practises are sustainable and environmentally friendly (unlike other bee farms). The tour was interesting and very hands on. Shaun personalises the tour to suit the group, based on your prior knowledge and experience with bees. The only thing we would do differently next time is book directly through their website (Living Honey Kangaroo Island) so that more money goes into their pockets 👍 Thanks Shaun!

We booked a Beekeeping Experience with Shawn & Anthea to learn more about bees and honey while in Kangaroo Island.
Let’s just say that we were all blown away by how friendly and knowledgeable Shawn & Anthea were and how well they explained everything to us.
We felt like they made us feel very welcome from the time we drove down their driveway. We also loved seeing their beautiful peacock and cute puppy when we arrived (plus a few other farm animals).
Shawn & Anthea took their time and explained everything in great detail and answered all our questions. We never felt rushed and always felt very relaxed (even when holding a bunch of bees).
We have now realised how much more complex bees are than we originally thought and learnt about different bees, their important roles and the process of making honey. We even got to watch a few baby bees breaking out of their cell for the first time (which was amazing) and also spotted the Queen bee.
Shawn & Anthea are definitely passionate about what they do and it shows!
I would highly recommend this experience when visiting Kangaroo Island and it’s definitely something that stood out on our trip and we’ll remember for many years to come.
The honey they produce would have to be the best honey we’ve ever tried!!
We are now looking into getting our own beehive and are very excited to continue learning more about these amazing creatures.

The beekeeping experience was extremely informative and we felt very safe the whole time. Seeing the life cycle of the bee and seeing the hives in action was brilliant, and Shawn and Anthea are obviously very passionate about what they do. They even offered to supply me with bee education resources for my class should I need them 🙂.
