Visit a slice of paradise right outside the hustle and bustle of Waikiki. Join me on a bird watching/natural history hike in the Koolau Mountain Watershed, a short 15-minute drive outside of downtown. We will explore the watershed on semi-maintained hiking trails under the rainforest canopy. With bird watching, slow and steady is the name of the game so don't worry that we will be running up any hiking trails. The hike is up and back, taking roughly 2hrs in total. We will watch the daybreak and listen to the morning chorus of birds as we explore the valley taking in the views of downtown and Round Top Ridge. On the trail we will look/listen for birds, and I'll keep a list to share afterwards in a special certificate unique to each trip. I will give a quick binoculars tutorial at the start so you feel comfortable and ready to spot our feathered friends. During the hike I'll discuss the natural history of how Hawaii, how the species we see got to the island, what happened to the native birds and why, and what efforts are being made to conserve them. This tour focuses mainly on the natural history of Hawaii, and is not a typical bird tour where the main aim is to check species off of a list. With all wildlife viewing there are no guarantees of what we will see, but I can guarantee a fun time! At the end of our tour we will enjoy a cup of coffee near the Hawaiian Nature Center.
Jared And Sera
I (Sera) am professional wildlife biologist, self proclaimed bird nerd and history buff. I worked in the private, government and non-profit sectors conducting bird and other wildlife surveys, before setting out to explore my passions for travel and how human history has shaped the natural landscape around us. I’ve circumnavigated the globe, hiking and bird watching along the way in places like New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Balkans, Turkey, and Europe. I co-founded Adventure Bound Bumpkins to share what I had learned about each area’s history, and how human influences have shaped their natural landscapes.
I'll provide coffee and reusable cups for you to enjoy on the trip. It is a morning hike after all, and no morning is…
We can arrange pick-up from your Honolulu/Waikiki lodging, or you can meet me at the trail head. Whichever works better for…
I will provide binoculars for use during the hike if you do not have your own. Please notify me of how many pairs you will…
We will explore the Koolau Mountain Range and Watershed under a rich rainforest canopy. Our hike is up and back on a easier, uphill trail for a total of ~1-1.5 miles. As we hike up the hillside face will be treated to beautiful views over the adjacent valleys, streams, Round Top Ridge, and Honolulu through breaks in the forest. Forest and edge habitats provide excellent opportunities to see a variety of wildlife.
Please be prepared to hike for roughly 2hrs with proper footwear, rain/sun gear, water and snacks. It can rain when sunny and be humid. Trails are maintained but uneven, and may have mosquitos. Theres always an element of luck with viewing wildlife, so I cannot guarantee which species we will see.
