Come with me and explore all the corners of my small-scale food forest. We live in a world filled with the tastes and textures of many foods that most people in the United States have never heard of. And we don't always know how to eat some foods that are oh-so-familiar. Did you know that you can eat broccoli leaves (and that they taste like broccoli florets)? I love to share what I know about these foods and how I grow them. Despite the numerous and voracious pests that call Florida home, I grow all this without herbicides or pesticides.
Twenty years ago, I planted some tropical fruit trees. Then I began looking into what greens would grow during our sweltering summers. Nothing from the supermarket seemed promising! I set out to educate myself and found subtropical vegetables that flourish over the summer. Only after the permaculture movement hit, did I discover that there is a name for what I had created in my backyard - a Food Forest. As my yard became more edible, I found that I had far more abundance than we could eat at home. About ten years ago, I started selling the surplus through the Sarasota Farmers Market. About five years ago, I embarked on a cross-country sustainable farm tour to visit farmers who engaging in sustainable practices. I shared the vision and practices from each farm on the GroundBreaking Roots blog.
