This has to be one of the most scenic and beautiful places you can rent. If you want to feel inspired, refreshed, or just get away from hustle, bustle, and busy life, this is the place to do it. Quaint, rustic, yet refined.

This is a comfortable barn apartment, located in a beautiful horse farm. Waking up in the morning was breathtaking with the views and quiet surroundings. The apartment was extremely clean and had everything a family would need. Location wise it was really convenient to Lake Glenville and Cashiers. Perfect place for a family stay or two couples to explore the area. I highly recommend it and will definitely keep in mind for future visits. One thing to keep in mind is that there is no cell phone (AT&T) or Wi-Fi service in the apartment. There is a landline for calls, but any research must be done prior to arriving, in the main house porch or in town. There are several magazines and books about the area in the apartment. Joe provides satellite TV, so that's helpful for little ones after a day out in town as you are getting ready for bed or in the mornings while making breakfast.

When describing the Barn Apartment and the property around it, my friend and I use words like “tranquil” and “peaceful” and “zen,” but we kept returning to “bucolic.” The word was invented for a spot like this. The place was at one time a horse farm and still has the hallmarks – a large fenced pasture and pond; and a barn with several stables, hay loft and, at the far end, the apartment. Joe’s beautiful house sits on the hill above the barn, within view but far enough away to afford complete privacy. The photos do not do the property justice. Speaking of privacy, Joe had just the right balance between helpfulness and laissez-faireness (not a word, but it works here). He left the door open for our much-delayed arrival and came down from the house to greet us soon after we got there. He suggested some things to do, let us know which of the local towns had interesting shops, how to take the scenic route around the area, etc. – and by golly, is it ever scenic, complete with several waterfalls and turnouts so you can stop and enjoy them. There are also area brochures in the apartment. After that, we saw Joe somewhere around the property every day and every time we did, he asked if we needed anything – several times offering to install a window air conditioner as the August temperatures were higher than usual. (More about that below.) We requested two items: an ice tray and a measuring cup. Joe was back within five minutes with both. He not only brought an ice tray; he brought one with the ice in it and a plastic baggy with some more ice cubes. Clearly, he had robbed his own freezer to provide for ours. Ditto for the measuring cup. He brought not just one but three different sizes. His wife also extended her hospitality by sending down a couple of ears of corn with directions on how to cook them in the microwave. If you haven’t tried cooking corn this way, I suggest doing so. Leave the husk on the corn and stick the ears in the microwave for 3 minutes. It totally works. The apartment itself is glamping at the highest level – full kitchen, 2 queen-bedded bedrooms, a big bathroom with a hot shower and lots of towels, and a main room with a sliding glass door looking out on the deck. The living room furniture is nice and comfortable, and everything is tastefully decorated. (Well, to be completely honest, it’s probably a little too cushy to actually qualify as glamping.) The property is more extensive that we realized at first. There are trails through the woods that we didn’t get to explore because we stuck to the country road/driveway a bit too much. My dog was in her element, too. She loved wandering and exploring with us. As noted above, there’s no ac. We were a little concerned about that but once we...

This place is wonderful. No cell phone or internet was a huge plus. Joe was friendly and suggested places for us to see. The apartment was cozy and comfortable. We would come back in a heart beat.

Wonderful place. So relaxing. Good place to unwind. There's a small challenge with bees, but overall very enjoyable stay.

Everything was great!!! The only drawback for us, which may not be a drawback for others, was that the cabin was located high up a mountain, so it made it hard to get to other places, which we wanted to do. But the cabin itself was so great, clean, beautiful location, peaceful, and the lack of cell service was a nice break from reality!!

Joe has a nice little apartment, suitable for adults and kids alike--careful if you're bringing very young ones, elderly, or someone with mobility issues, because there are stairs down to each bedroom that could certainly be a hazard! Baseboard heat was very efficient, once we got it turned on. Comfortable beds, ample hot water, and a dishwasher are pluses. If you plan on doing much cooking, you may want to bring some baking accoutrements until Joe stocks with some--very spartan aside from basic pots/pans. Lovely views of pastures; having an ATV allowed us to explore the mountainside. Fishing will be better once pond is re-stocked, but it's a lovely setting to do so. Being able to bring our small dog was a definite plus. Would enjoy a trip up during the summer when we can go to the lake. Thanks, Joe!

I am semi retired, live in the Woodlands, Texas and spend most of the summer in the mountains of Western North Carolina. My family enjoy the mountains and all they have to offer, hiking, fly fishing and all the beautiful views. We have a 50 acre horse farm and a cabin adjacent to our property that we enjoy renting out so others can enjoy the same beauty that we enjoy.
