I find it difficult when guests do not take responsibility for the choices they make. Prior to confirming bookings, potential guests are directed to a page, requiring acknowledgement of ‘house rules’. For my accommodation, this includes - one dog and two cats. Yet on arrival, when meeting her in the garden, Helen said, “I didn’t know you had a dog, these two (indicating her children) are not very good with dogs.” I said I understood and offered to cancel but she felt this was not now an option. In this review, Helen states that her children were “quite scared” but from what I witnessed, they seemed very frightened during their visit. My dog, like many others, barks when people arrive at the property and sometimes as a greeting. Stating my dog has a “big personality” means different things to different people. Please be assured, she is medium size, well-trained, responsive and very friendly.
It is made clear that the property is only suitable for children over 12 years as to reach the bedroom, there are 13 steps with two turns and a slate floor at the bottom; for safety, I consider young children need to be accompanied at all times and I cannot guarantee this will happen. I am insured, but cannot take responsibility for the wellbeing of other peoples’ children. On this occasion, Helen was most grateful that I agreed to welcome her children with the proviso that she may need to sign something to say she was responsible for their safety whilst on my premises. This was agreed amicably.
In terms of access, I offer bed and breakfast; if guests want all day access then it is probably more appropriate to book a hotel or accommodation that is independent of the host property. I work both at home and away. When I am not at home I do not expect my guests to have the responsibility of ensuring my pets are safe indoors when they go out. However, I always try to accommodate guests’ wishes if they explain their expectations prior to arrival. To accommodate Helen’s group I delayed going to work on the Saturday morning, came back early on Saturday afternoon and returned early from lunch out on the Sunday.
I would add that whilst Helen posted this review, it was her mother and children who stayed here and not Helen herself.
