Take a short walk to potter through the old Lunawanna Cemetery. Walk for 3 minutes and then stroll along the hidden gem that is Cemetery Beach, drinking in clean water, clean sand and stunning views up the Huon Valley, and across the Channel to the majestic Hartz Mountains and Adamson’s Peak.
A family of white echidna lives in the area and you may be lucky enough to see one; they are shy and timid so don’t get too close.
The area abounds in bird life. Along the shores of Daniel’s Bay you will see silver gulls, Pacific gulls, oyster catchers and herons. Sea eagles do occasional fly overs. In the surrounding bush superb blue wrens, flame robins and a variety of parrots and cockatoos live.
A quick 20 minute drive gets you to Cloudy Bay looking out into the Southern Ocean. 30 minutes will see you at the Cape Bruny Lighthouse with more stunning sea views and a peak into the South West World Heritage area. Both trips are full of other spots to explore.
Don’t forget to spoil yourself up at Bruny Island Wines for glorious food and wine from Australia’s southernmost vineyard.
