The Mansion is at the heart of one of the most beautiful cities in the world, ladened with Spanish influence and the power of multiculturalism. Located in "El Centro" the oldest and most prosperous neighborhood in the walled city, where the largest number of churches, squares, museums, parks are located and where Cartagena vibrates in its greatest splendor.
As soon as you walk through the stone portal's Mansion time stops, the air gets fresher, and the filtered light of the monumental spaces transport you. The Mansion preserves its XVIII century architecture, the original stone, brick and lime 25 inches walls, the spectacular structures in sturdy tropical woods, the central patio, the balconies.
The loft takes advantage of the colonial architecture of the house creating a calm and unique atmosphere, the beautiful white marble floor reflects the light, the handcrafted texture of the walls creates a softness, the ceiling with impressive strong wooden beams, the wooden balcony to beautiful Santo Domingo street, the tribune towards the hallway, the grille window towards the inner courtyard.
The kitchen area is next to the rest of the spaces and has a large window to the hall and the patio. The shower and toilet are separated from the vanity for greater comfort. The living area is next to the balcony with a delicious hammock hand-spun in 100% cotton by artisans from the region. The furniture is artisanal made from oak wood. The wardrobe is a Deco style antique with mirror and internal light. The dining room chairs are original "Thonet" from a local antique shop . All the lingerie is in 100% cotton, the cushions are made of artisanal cotton fabric from local handlooms, the painting is by the Caribbean artist Flavia Rosales and is a tribute to the Caribbean sea, the tapestry is hand-woven by the Zenu indigenous ethnic group made in "cañaflecha" a palm endemic to the region. The kitchen and bathroom faucets are artisan cast bronze.
Cartagena de Indias was founded in 1.533, at the end of the 16th (XVI) century the irregular layout that the city presents today was already visible. In the 17th (XVII) century the houses already have the features that identify them: balconies, patios, doorways with wood and masonry construction techniques.
The Mansion Santo Domingo have its origins in the seventeenth (XVII) century, the architecture of the Mansion is classified as "Casa Alta": first importance house, and it is part of the jewels of the city, they are 2-storey houses with “Entrepiso” and belonged to the wealthiest families. Residential architecture in Cartagena comes from the tradition of European Mediterranean dwellings and the inner courtyard of the Islamic culture, both were adapted to the climate, the landscape and the materials of the Tropics.
The ground floor at street level was used for commercial premises, the upper floor for lounges and rooms. On the façade of the houses of first importance we find "La Portada" it is the framework that highlights the access, designed in classical "Toscano" style and made of beautiful coral stone.
"El Porton" the gate, derived from Andalusian residential architecture made with planks over a structure of strong tropical wood.
"El Balcon” the balcony, are said to come from the Romans and from the Moors who came to Spain, they are typical Spanish popular architecture and are the ones that together make the streets of Cartagena unique with their rhythms, vegetation and contrasts.
"El Zaguan" is the entrance space to the house and represents its importance, in this house it is double height with a "Tribune" or small interior balcony. El Zaguan communicates with "El Vestibulo" which connects the ground floor with the upper floor and the inner courtyard with the house, it is a monumental distribution space that represents the excellence of the house.
"La Arcada" the arcade, is a transitional space that prolongs the inner courtyard, it were also used in cloisters and convents in Cartagena, they have a clear antecedent in the cultured and popular architecture of Spain in both form and use, it is the access to the patio and almost always contains a wooden "Reja", grating, that lets the breeze and light from the patio pass inside.
"El Patio" is the heart of the house, an evocative space with shade and vegetation, open to the sky and rain. The walls of the house are between 2 and up to 4 feet thick, made of coral stone, lime mortar and handmade clay brick, they keep the interior of the house fresh.
The Roofs are "Flat" or "Inclined", made with a wooden structure of beams and boards, mortar and clay tiles.
The floors are made of clay or marble planks over a structure of sturdy wooden beams and mortar.
Windows are of a single type: "Ventana de Reja” grating windows, they are a wooden frame separated from the wall with a wooden baluster grille. The balusters were also used on balconies as part of the railings, they are an adaptation of the ones used in Spain and other Mediterranean countries, first in religious and aristocratic architecture, made in marble or stone. The wooden balusters of Cartagena's architecture are a transposition of those.

From its foundation in the 16th century (XVI) and throughout the Spanish "Virreinato" period, Cartagena de Indias was one of the most important ports in Spanish America. It was heavily walled and fortified until it became the most robust fortress in South America and the Caribbean with it's extraordinary military architecture. Over time, Cartagena has developed, conserving its Historic Center and becoming one of the most important ports in the Caribbean and the World. "La Ciudad Amurallada" was declared by UNESCO "World Heritage Site, Port, Fortress and Monumental Complex of Cartagena de Indias" in 1984.
On the corner of the Mansion it is the famous "Plaza Santo Domingo", the oldest in the city, overlooks the magnificent Church and the convent that give the square its name. The square is alive all day, restaurants, cafes, bars. At the cloister there is the wonderful "Center of art and culture from the Spanish cooperation" with year-round programming: music, art exhibitions, conferences, cinema, etc. One more block, in the corner in front of the Coralina stone walls that surround the city you will arrive at the "NH Art Gallery", with the best artists from Colombia and the World. Opposite is "Cafe Libro" a pleasant outdoor terrace right besides the wall. Climbing the wall you will find unique "Cafe del Mar" where you can see the most gorgeous sunsets. From there you can walk the fortified walls in all its extension besides the sea, enjoying the salty breeze and looking at the old city from above. Just one block from the house but in the other direction is the Magnificent "Cathedral of Cartagena", with its illuminated tower and awesome interior. Right in front it is the beautiful "Parque de Bolivar", with its centennial trees and its water fountains, a perfect resting and meeting place. On the other side of the park is "El Palacio de la Inquisición", a museum with traveling exhibitions, cultural events, and a dark and gloomy past. Around the corner the beautiful building from "Biblioteca Publica Bartolome Calvo". Going down the street of Santa Teresa you get to the square with the same name, there is a restaurant and open-air cafe besides Charleston hotel. Climbing the wall is the "Baluarte de San Rafael", with a restaurant and live music with ocean and city views. In front is the imposing building of the "Museo Naval", with exhibitions and events throughout the year. Going down the street of San Juan de Dios, you arrive at the "Plaza de San Pedro Claver", with the church and the beautiful cloister that give it its name, there you will find cafes, and restaurants. In front is "El Museo de Arte Moderno" with a permanent collection of the most representative artists of the Caribbean. Next to the Museum is "La Alcaldia" and the "Plaza de la Aduana" with its curious triangular shape. This plaza adjoins the "Plaza de los Coches" which is the most important entrance to the city through the "Puerta del Reloj". From there you can go out from el centro to "Muelle de los Pegasos" in front of the bay, the "Paseo de los Mártires", "El Parque Centenario" and explore the wonderful popular neighborhood of "Getsemani" full of color and Bohemian life.
