Our simple cozy sleeping house is 10'x8'' single room cordwood cabin has a smooth Door County rock floor and sleeps two in a full bed. There is an outhouse with a composting toilet, an eco- design outdoor shower attached to an old cedar 12x12 deck for private sunbathing & long naps. In the outdoor kitchen there is a stainless sink with a foot pump for dishes, also a couple rocket stoves and a fire pit grill, mini fridge, kitchenware, patio table/chairs.

房源空間
Thanks for considering the sleeping house as a rental option for your stay in door county. Our rustic 8x10 cabin is set about 30 feet from the main house and accommodates two guests who are comfortable in a small space. -If you are inspired to cook a meal outside, comfortable using a composting toilet and taking a shower under a gentle stream in the pines you will experience the value of the sleeping house. On occasion we get asked if an extra guest (s) can join with a tent which we are open but needs to be approved at the time of the reservation and an extra charge of 25 per night per guest. Kids under 10 are free.

Inside the sleeping house we added a small wicker loveseat to go with the full size bed with all cotton sheets, four pillows and a down comforter covered by a duvet. We wash all the the bedding every time except the mattress cover.
Two side table with lamps, a tall open shelf for your things , a fan for ventilation on the top shelf, and a small floor heater for cooler nights can be turned on to make it toasty. The walls are eight inches thick so it does get toasty.
This is self sufficient lodging with a composting toilet inside a separate tiny bano and an outdoor cedar shower. The shower is a gravity shower fed by two barrels, painted black on one side so the sun has extra incentive to heat the water. In the summer months you should be able to get a lukewarm shower but that is not a guaranteed since we can not control how the sun will heat the water in the barrels . We supply towels, biodegradable shampoo, bar soap.

The outdoor kitchen is supplied with simple kitchenware for making and serving a meal plus some extras like a french press, coffee grinder and coffee beans and tea. We supply bio soap, toilet paper, bio shampoo and conditioner, paper towels and napkins, coffee, tea and honey! There is also electricity for small electrics including lamps, a mini fridge, phone charger, a hot pot, fan and a heater ( if needed). We also provide fresh well water for drinking water, a teapot, cooking mitts, flashlight, matches and other essentials. You do have wifi also in the cabin. Networks is Kays and password is posted on a birch bark on the window sill.

THINGS TO NOTE
We have a designated parking spot for the sleeping house please follow the small blue signs and see more information in check in/ check out details.
Our very sweet neighbors to our east host six large weddings a year usually on a Saturday night and often in the evening. There is usually music at night till 11:00 so please ask for dates if this matters to you.
- After 10:30 pm and until 6am we have quiet hours. We prefer our guests to arrive at latest for checkin by 8pm. If you are going to be later than that and it is your first time here please let us know ahead of time.
_ All fires must be in the cast iron fire pit we often stock wood supply but it is not guaranteed. There are absolutely no tiki torches allowed.
-This sleeping house cabin is for outdoorsy people who value being closer to the elements and enjoy of natural living at a slower pace. This is the real value of the sleeping house, it slows you down.
-If you are inspired to cook a meal outside, comfortable using a composting toilet and taking a shower under a gentle stream in the pines you will experience the value of the sleeping house.
- The meadow is full bees, crickets, flies, spiders, and grasshoppers all around, you will hear the rain on the rooftop, loud frogs at saloon time and occasionally have to deal with mosquitos , however we live on a hill, often have a great breeze so i think we have very few mosquitos. I try to keep supplied citronella candles and essential oil.
-We allow one dog because the cabin is small and has a tender screen door which we have fixed a few times, if you have two super chill dogs you can send a note about it to be considered. The neighbors who live on five acres next door have a horse farm with an electric fence so fyi if your dog wanders. Our border Blue heads over to play with the neighbors dog Scout often and has never had a problem.
- If you run out of drinking water and we are not around you can fill the five gallon jug up at the house spout by the main house. We have very good well water.
-In the fall we have the most amazing Indian Summer Days but we also have cold, wet and rainy days where sweater and coats are needed so please be certain all weather works for you when booking the sleeping house because we do not do refunds due to weather.
- We are taking care of our daughters cats this summer so please drive very slowly and be alert to them wandering near as you travel back to the sleeping house with your car. We have sleeping house signs where we would like you to park your car. Please do not park your car anywhere else.
-Checking out is super simple-please carry your bag of recyclables and your bag of garbage to the main large bins in the front of the green pole barn on your way out as you exit. Recyclables can be mixed and please remember to empty them from the white plastic kitchen trash bag directly into to the large BLUE LID container.
-Please strip your sheets we will pick them up with you used towels.

More about the land and location -
Our northern door land is on a hill so the meadow is open, high and dry and happens to be on a natural migration path. You may see turkey vultures , hawks, eagles, and owls, along with flocks of pelicans, geese and sandhill cranes. Warms winds move through all day in the summer, we are 3/4 ,mile from the lake which can be easily accessed by taking HWY ZZ to Waters End Road east. There you will find a very quaint shoreline and Sand Beach County Park with a shallow soft sand walk in which is especially nice for little ones. Also you will often hear the coyotes at night, see turkeys and pileated woodpeckers, and hear doves often in the morning if your windows are open. We also have blue birds in a few of our bird houses and yellow finch nesting.

Feel free to walk the meadow trail, visit our vegetable garden or enjoy the hammock in woods . There is central council area with the greatest vistas for sunsets for everyone to enjoy. You will see a wooden bench, large circle table and yellow and white striped cushioned chairs.

The Sleeping House cordwood tiny cabin is about 25 paces form the main house which has two independent dwellings. The main house is divided into to two separate dwellings We rent the "Meadow Sweet Retreat" on the west side of the house so you may run into other guests. The main house was built about 20 years ago by a local builder and arborist so we are graced with his fore thought and intentional tree plantings, a healthy and elegant community forest of hardwoods, pines and spruces. We also have a 30x50 pole barn where you can store your bikes etc.. and one other additional lodging cabin we call the Cottage Barn Guest House, which our daughters and friends and family stay.
HISTORY OF SLEEPING HOUSE
How the Sleeping house came to be .....Our oldest daughter Grace researched, designed and built this cordwood tiny house as a sustainable design project to fulfill her 12 college credit independent study at Evergreen College in Olympia WA. We, her mom and dad, were invited to join in the fun and enjoyed every minute of three months it took to build the tiny house. We had intended for it to be a sauna but found it more useful as a sleeping house since we are here that much in the winter.
All the lumber for framing the house was locally milled by the Henschel"s awesome Sawmill in Egg Harbor. The eight inch cord wood sections were cut from 50 local 30' cedar tree trunks, all the sand, driftwood, rock and gravel came from the land, windows from the restore, and we salvaged aluminum roofing from a tear down in Ashland. Our local hardware stores supplied us with all the hardwares except for the steel brackets (designed by Grace's engineer dad Tim) those were manufactured by Hi-Tec in Sturgeon Bay. Grace and I were inspired to naturally design in the large scale weathered driftwood collage type sculpture from meadow finds, found glass and collected soft smooth lake Michigan rock, it was a moment to moment unfolding tribute to the raw fun we had shaping it all into form ... it is a sweet elemental haven for simple people and basic living.

房客使用權限
We have designated a place for one car to park near the sleeping house, please follow the blue signs and park your car in the designated location. Please do not take your car in any undesignated location . More specific details about check in in the house manual. We have two other guest houses so please be considerate of the spaces outside of your rented area when exploring the property. We have mowed a trails for walking so please feel free to take the trail. Also across the road just about 50 feet west of our mailbox their is a mowed trail that our neighbors have graciously invited us to walk, so feel free to enjoy that as well.

其他注意事項
We have a border collie name Blue who is very friendly and love to play. His favorite activity is swimming in Lake Michigan which he gets to do almost every day. He is not a barker unless he is startled. He does love to run through the meadow following the seagulls, cranes and hawks and turkey vultures that fly over head.

The sleeping house is situated on the east end of our meadow property about 60 feet from the main house. Our neighbors across the tree line keep horses so you may hear them neigh. It is a quiet, spacious, sunny property with lots of Birch, Oak, Juniper, Walnut, White Pine and Scotch Pine, Frazer Pine and Spruce. A short five minute drive down Hill road and you reach Bay Shore Drive and the heart of Sister Bay village. It is an active property and we are often engaging in projects on the land. We host guests in three other dwellings on the land and you are likely to see people coming and going.

Our DOOR COUNTY Profile Tim's parents purchased a modest lakefront vacation home on Door Bluff Road in 1969 when he was nine and the second oldest of six. His mother Inger had arrived in the US from Sweden ten years earlier and found this idyllic Swedish connection thriving on the northern door peninsula ! Tim's dad deepened the family roots when he acquired a small 36 ' sailboat so the whole crew could recreate on the summer waters of Lake Michigan. I was first invited to join Tim and his family eight years later on one of their vacations when I was 17 and we were newly sweet-hearted . Now 40 years later after thousands of all weather hikes on Hotz trail, hundreds of good beach days at Newport and countless cold yet welcoming water swims, we have the honor of caring for a few special vacation homes in Northern Door including our own. No matter where we lived throughout our life, or how life was unfolding, neither of us have ever missed a summer vacation in gentle woods of northern door. We honor and are protective of the delicate escarpment land, we respect the long time year round family residents who have kept the peninsula alive in the winter and we admire the hard working perennial business owners that make door county so naturally welcoming . We relish our days in northern door, enjoying the lingering springs, cooler restorative summer weather and inspiring magnificent fall colors. Being close to such a rare clean fresh body of water we consider a luxury. We feel blessed to have been supported by our families, friends and community throughout life's progression. Now to be able to recreate our own door county home haven experience to share with our loved one and an expanded community is a privilege. We live six months of the year in our sweet meadow home on HIll Road in Sister Bay. Our MadisonWI Profile We became the second owners of the Chamberlain house in 1991, caring for this now 100 year old house in the heart of Madison's historic district has been an experience of on going culture building for our family over the decades.... After being relatively light on our feet for nearly a decade after college, we returned to our home town married with two babies girls needing a nest. We knew we wanted to live near the grandparents and began our search! The Chamberlain house was listed for just one day in the newspaper and somehow I managed to persuade the owner over the phone to let me walk through. He had pulled the ad because he realized the house was not ready to show. It had become a rental property over the years with little to no maintenance, suffice it to say the house had lost its sparkle. I specifically remember my mother in law at the time saying after her tour, “I would not touch it with a ten foot pole.” From the street, the aging dark brown paint job, the falling off gutters and gapping whole under the front porch stood out like a sore thumb in this tidy historic residential neighborhood. I was drawn in by the rustic street appeal, sitting there weathered on this sweet little raise in the land, this 80 years old house charmed me and called out for care. Right off the bat, upon entering the screened porch, childhood memories of cloud watching for hours and day dreaming on the couch of my Gram's front porch in the UP were revived...... when we pushed open the solid oak front door we were met with waves of cat pee emanating from the gold shag carpet which shook me right out of my daydream. i imagined with ease that beneath the old soiled covering (which I immediately wanted to begin tearing out) was a protected hardwood floor. The smell was strong and begged to distract us from the rich patinated wood and leaded glass built-ins. The fact that there was no light shining through the windows didn’t help. I took the liberty of moving aside the sagging Mexican blanket covering the morning sun from streaming through the prominent east facing picture window. The sunshine lit the room up and as we walked through each room I was able to imagine it in its original splendor. The quality of the craftsmanship inspired me, some focused skilled crew built it back in 1915 for $4000.00. I began envisioning our family living under this roof.........twenty nine years later, several dozen home repair projects completed (including even before we moved in a complete rewiring of the entire electric system of the house) it became a home base to our three amazing daughters, a fervent partnership, four beloved border collies, many regal cats, ancient friendships, countless family gatherings, and thousands of shared delicious meals. Today we continue the tradition of deepening our home base and culture by welcoming in folks from all walks of life and from all parts of the world.

住宿期間
We are family oriented, love all seasons in door county but especially the summer and fall. We always have a project or three going. We try to swim Lake Michigan daily, take morning walks on our favorite trails in Newport State Park and kayak or canoe Europe Lake, Sand Bay or Rowley's bays. 2021 we will have three guest houses so you may run into other guests on the property. We also have lots of friends and family who visit. IN the back of the main house there is central area in the meadow we have a bench, chairs and a fire pit where all guests are welcome to gather for sunsets and to enjoy the evening choir of critters that comes alive at saloon time. In general though we let our guests set the level of exchange, we appreciate and respect privacy, solitude and quiet but love to connect too.
