A favourite is the spectacular Sublime Point walking track –
The Sublime point walking track starts or ends at Austinmer or Sublime Point. It has been significantly renovated in recent years and combines many wooden steps with some aluminium ladders in the steeper rock climbing parts particularly those close to the top of the escarpment. This is perhaps Wollongong and the Illawarra's most spectacular attraction and is short enough for most people with moderate fitness.
Wodi Wodi Bush Walk
A beautiful walk starting from Stanwell Park Railway station, eventually starting the steep ascent up to Mount Mitchell with spectacular views over Stanwell Park. This walk has epic escarpment views and beautiful rainforest - not to mention the creek passings.
You will need reasonable fitness and agility to enjoy the rough terrain, you will get your hands dirty! It is a test on cardio skills and anyone with knee or joint problems will struggle and is not recommended. There are excellent photo opportunities and a generally enjoyable place to delight in Illawarra's nature!
ILLAWARRA ESCARPMENT TRAVERSE
Illawarra Escarpment Traverse. Stanwell Park - Forest Track - Austinmer. Great views of the Illawarra coast. The vegetation is varied along the walk including sections of rainforest. Iconic ladders and steps down the escarpment to finish.
Sea Cliff Bridge Lookout
Sea Cliff Bridge Lookout is easily the greatest location in the Wollongong region for a sunrise. The Iconic Sea cliff bridge connects Coalcliff and Clifton, built to replace the eroding cliff hugging road. The bridge is featured in countless car and tourism advertisements for its unique characteristics. If early mornings aren't you thing but Photography is, then this spot also makes for excellent long exposure photography of cars lights travelling along the bridge.
The Sea Cliff Bridge Trail Head
The start of the track up to view sea cliff bridge starts on the south side of the bridge. Find parking on the Clifton side of the bridge and walk towards the bridge. Heading north on the bridge on the left side of the road you will see a white sign with black writing with "Sea Cliff bridge" written in it. In front of this sign there is a small parking bay. The bushes by this parking bay is the start of the trail up to the top of sea cliff bridge. You should notice a slightly worn in track heading into the thick bushes. If still unclear as to where the trail head starts, the map below pinpoints the location.
Once you are on the track you will notice a warn in track that starts leading up hill to the lookout. Take note that the track up is very steep so make sure to wear appropriate footwear. If going for sunrise or sunset remember a head torch as your hands will be mostly tied up for the climb uphill. The track up is only a few hundred meters but will take you roughly 15-20 minutes to climb up. There are several warn in tracks on the way up but they all mostly meet back up.
Little Austi is an exposed beach and reef break that has quite consistent surf. Offshore winds are from the northwest. Ideal swell is from the east northeast. Directly below the apartment there is a wedging left hand break and there is a right hand reef break as well.
Main Austinmer Family Beach
Local families love Austinmer Beach, particularly the fenced in playground (sadly no shade cloth) that has plenty of activities for kids of a variety of ages. The rock pools are a major draw for this beach, too.
Located at the south end of the beach, they attract children and adults alike with their amazing ocean life. We spotted fish, a crab, sea snails, an anemone, and some freaky looking creatures that none of us could identify. Also at the south end of the beach are two large ocean pools.
