The Donut Haus has moved to the Sinclair gas station about a mile west (toward the National Park) of the old location, but don’t worry, the same folks and same recipes are still creating the classic donut magic. These donuts are an iconic part of any trip to Estes Park and the line in the summer can be long. They will close when they sell out, so get there early for the best selection.
Our faves are the cheesecake cinnamon roll (a sharing size donut for sure) and the pinecones.

Back in the 60s this was a roadhouse, and the college students would come up from Boulder to dance to the bands. Now, it is an excellent restaurant with regular live music. The staff are great, the atmosphere is pure mountain rustic, and the music is fun. They don’t take reservations, so plan to get there early for happy hour or just get there early enough that a long wait time doesn’t get you too hangry. (This is a favorite hang out for RMNP employees and wildland fire crews — if you sit at the bar long enough you might be able to get some inside tips and good stories.)

If you are staying at our House on the Hill or 1920s Cottage, this little restaurant is within walking distance, which is a nice plus if you want wine with dinner.

Hermit Park, a county park, has miles of mountain bike trails as well as the Krueger Rock Hike*. The trail ends at a 180 degree view of the Estes Valley — but if you scramble to the top of Krueger Rock, you will be treated to a 360 degree view of the whole area. 1000ft elevation gain in 2 miles, it’s a moderate hike with several scenic views on the way up — so if you don’t want to go all the way, you can still get an amazing family photo. The park closes December - February depending on snow accumulation.
*Fall of 2021 a fire started in the neighborhood on the west side of Krueger Rock, fueled by high winds it raced up the ridge while firefighters fought to keep the homes safe. You will hike through the burn scar in the last 1/4 mile before the summit.

The rainbow slide is one of those bizarrely iconic pieces of Estes Park’s fabric. Every kid in town has been down the rainbow slide, and a good percentage have worked at Fun City at least one summer of their life. There is putt putt golf and bumper cars too, but the slide is everything.
