Take an open air swim at the new harbor bath at Nordhavn. Its only 10 minutes walk from my apartment. Nordhavn is being transformed from an active industrial port into a modern residential and business quarter. If you love modern architecture I would recommend spend some time walking around this area.

Sønder Boulevard on Vesterbro got a serious facelift in 2007, which resulted in a long, green belt with endless possibilities for activities for all ages. The goal with the makeover was to create an attractive and green city space on Vesterbro. The mission proved highly succesful as the boulevard today is one of Vesterbro's most popular recreational areas and hang out spots filled with shopping and great cafés. There are playgrounds, artificial grass for ball games and a field with asphalt for biking, etc. The strip stretching from one end to the other compose a perfect area for kids to run and play.

Open air swimming right in the centre of the city. Meet local families with children, beach boys and regular swimmers alike. On hot days, Copenhageners swim with the city's skyline in free view. During the week, many locals pass the pool for a quick dip on their way home from work. The quality of the water is checked daily and has to be approved by the authorities before swimmers are let in. There are five pools in all, two of which are specifically for children. The shallowest pool is 30 cm deep. The diving towers are one, three, and five metres high respectively.

The minute the sun comes out, the vast area around the lakes fills up with strolling couples, panting joggers, brunch devotees, kids feeding the ducks, and best friends sipping thermos coffee while taking in the best views of the city. Do an early morning jog on the paths surrounding the lakes (6kms), or head for one of the fine cafés: Kaffesalonen at 6, Peblinge Dossering, Café Front Page at 21, Sortedam Dossering, and Den Franske Café, 101, Sortedam Dossering. Excellent views! During summer you can rent rowing boats at the Søernes Bådudlejning (Copenhagen Lakes Boat Rentals), situated by the Dronning Louises Bridge.

Superkilen is a urban open space in Nørrebro located in the Quarter of Mimersgade. The park is divided into three main areas: The Red Square, The Black Market and The Green Park. While The Red Square designates the modern, urban life with café, music and sports, The Black Market is the classic square with fountain and benches. The Green Park is a park for picnics, sports and walking the dog.

The Østre Anlæg Park covers an area that used to be part of the old fortification system - a series of ramparts and moats encircling the Medieval town. Following a bubonic plague in the 1850s, the population 'burst' out of confinement from behind the fortified center, and urban development continued radiating out from the city's original nucleus. The park is designed by landscape architect H.A Flindt who also designed Ørstedsparken and Copenhagen Botanical garden.

Today, the Meatpacking District in Vesterbro is one of Copenhagen’s most popular places to go out. The Meatpacking District used to be home to Copenhagen’s meat industry businesses and still consists of three separate areas, referred to as the White, Grey and Brown "Meat City" for the dominant colour of their buildings. In recent years, it has changed into a new creative cluster with a trendy nightlife and a broad range of high quality restaurants. My favorite places are Mesteren and Lærlingen, Noho and Jolene.

Operaen or, The Opera, is an old brick-layered building in the upper end of Pusher Street, Christiania. It is an intimate music venue, night club and assembly place for the people of Christiania, as well as frequent visitors, activists and the likes. The stage usually features the more down-to-earth kind of bands, starting out with alternative rock, blues, jazz, hip hop, reggae and balkan. The small venue can hold from 60-100 people depending on the arrangements of the show.

Dronning Louise's Bro (Queen Louise's Bridge)connects inner Copenhagen and Nørrebro and is frequented by tons of cyclists and pedestrians every single day. However, the bridge has also become an unusally popular hangout. Queen Louise's Bridges was built in 1887 and went through a bit of a transformation when the road was narrowed in favour of wider sidewalks and bike paths. This resulted in significantly reduced car traffic and increased bicycle traffic. The transformation did not only affect cars and bikes, because wider sidewalks also turned the sunny side of Queen Louise's Bridge into a hip and popular hangout for many Copenhageners.

Christiania, the famous freetown of Copenhagen, is without a doubt one of Denmark’s most popular tourist attractions. This controversial area is loved by many, but has been a turning point for strong debate, especially because of the locals' relaxed view on hash and some unfortunate violent incidents. Christiania was founded in 1971, when a group of people cut a hole in the fence to the military barracks in Bådmandsgade. Soon the area was known for Pusher Street, where you could (and still can) buy hash and pot – but no hard drugs – from various stalls. Today many of the original settlers still live in the collectively controlled village, and the area has a clear 70s feel to it.

Containerbyen "Linjen" is a very chilled urban recreative space. It contains everything from wood and metal workshops to 3D printers, kitchen with clay oven, home theater and utility room with chickens. It's definitely a visit worth - you wont find this place in the guidebook!!

Cirkelbroen (The Circle Bridge) connects the areas around Copenhagen Harbour In august 2015, the pedestrian bridge Cirkelbroen opened for public use. Here, it makes everyday life easier for Copenhagen’s biking commuters as it connects Copenhagen area Christiansbro and Appelbys Plads. The bridge consists of five differently sized circular platforms, each with its own mast, and it is from these circular platforms, the name of the bridge arises. Besides the obvious functional benefit of the harbour’s new architectural landmark, the beautiful design with the five masts resembles a ship by the quay as a reference to Copenhagen’s shipping history.

With its very central location right in the heart of Copenhagen, more specifically from the end of Nyhavn, the 180 meters long bridge constitute a much need connection between two busy parts of Copenhagen: The city centre and Christianshavn/Holmen. No matter which side you come from, make sure to stop at the designated platforms on the bridge to take in the views of the harbour area and down Nyhavn canal. The Inner Harbour Bridge is also called “The Kissing Bridge” due to resemblance of a kiss, as it retracts to let ships pass, and then connects again in a calm, horizontal, sliding move. This is a rather special design for a harbour bridge as opposed to the more common vertical lift bridge.

The residential area Brumleby on Østerbro was initiated by the doctor Emil Hornemann to create better conditions for the city's poor after a bad cholera epidimic in the city in 1853. Today Bromleby belongs to some of the city's most coveted.

Shopping

In Ravnsborggade in Nørrebro there are a wide selection of different antiques and vintage shops, and you are almost bound to find what you came looking for. Or maybe something you didn't know you needed. The shops feature antique furniture pieces from the past three centuries, Royal Copenhagen porcelain, paintings, silverware, 18th century glassware etc. Nowhere else will you find a more varied selection of exquisite antiques, odd curios, and practical household articles.

Different, vibrant, relaxed and lively. Walking down Istedgade, you will experience a different and exciting side of Copenhagen where all kinds of people hang out - students, hipsters, families with children, etc. For many years, Istedgade was dominated by drugs, porn and prostitutes, but today the street has cleaned somewhat up, but luckily not too much, and is booming with shops, cafées, restaurants and bars. Istedgade stretches from Copenhagen Central Station to Enghave Plads and is not far from the Meatpacking District and Halmtorvet, where you will never be bored.

Getting Around

The blue and yellow harbour buses are a great means of transportation and a cheap alternative to the official canal tours. For the price of a normal bus ticket, you can get from the Royal Library (Black Diamond) in one end of the harbour to The Little Mermaid in the other end, passing the idyllic district Christianshavn, Nyhavn and the Royal Opera House on its way to Nordre Toldbod.

The obvious way to get around Copenhagen is of course by bike and that is when the public bike share, Bycyklen, comes in handy. The Bycyklen bikes are available all over the city and are easy to use. The city bikes are intelligent electric bikes that are available 24/7, 365 days a year. Each bike has a touchscreen tablet which can be used for navigation, payment and guidance to points of interest in Copenhagen and Frederiksberg. To use the bikes, you must create a user account. Create a Bycyklen account online at bycyklen.dk or directly on the bike tablet which is located on the handlebars. It only requires name, email address, telephone number and payment card information.

The Cisterns, the former water reservoir beneath the green grass of Søndermarken park across from Frederiksberg Castle, is a unique exhibition venue in Copenhagen. Buried deep beneath Søndermarken's green grass in the Frederiksberg area of Copenhagen is a massive underground space, where daylight never reaches. Here, you will find a dark, cold and moist underground world resembling the environment of cathedrals and gloomy catacombs. Once the spacious venue was the city's cisterns filled with 16 million liters of drinking water, but now the water is gone and has been replaced by art exhibitions and various events about the architecture and unique climate.
