Shoreditch's Pho Mile - Vietnamese Food Heaven. While Brick Lane is well known for its curry mile, east London also has another lesser-known mile to its name – the Pho Mile. It's taken over Kingsland Road over the past few decades but the spot has always played an important part in Shoreditch's history – it used to be a Roman road that marked the way to Kingsland, an old settlement that sits in modern day Dalston. What is it? The Pho Mile refers to the area that’s saturated in Vietnamese restaurants, stretching from Shoreditch High Street station to Hoxton. Many restaurants are just doors apart, all boasting different kinds of Vietnamese treats. As with the Brick Lane curry houses, these are not high-end spots – but that wouldn’t be in-keeping with the Kingsland Road vibe, after all. Despite the understated looks, there's a focus on authentic dishes and many make for the perfect pre-going out pit spot with good food and generous BYOB policies, where there's little or no corkage. The restaurants Below are my favourites, though it's worth simply heading out and trying to get through them all at one point or another. BunBunBun Vietamese feasting: BunBunBun's bites The clue’s in the name. This restaurant specialises in Bun cha, a traditional Hanoi dish of grilled pork with white rice noodles. As well as Bun cha, it offers both familiar and lesser-known dishes covering delicacies from all over Vietnam. Expect both street food style dishes and traditional hearty mains. Highlights include the honey marinated chargrilled pork belly slices to start and the spicy lemongrass beef brisket bun as a main. 134B Kingsland Road, E2 8DY LoongKee This venue's decor is simple and stripped back, with sole attention on the food. Try the prawn and tofu summer rolls here as well as the flavoursome Pho noodle soups. Expect it to be buzzy – after all, it also operates a BYOB policy. 134G Kingsland Rd, E2 8DY Viet Hoa Located in the middle of the Pho Mile, this Shoreditch restaurant has a rich history. It was originally established as a small canteen to provide affordable food for Vietnamese refugees who escaped the communist regime in Vietnam. Now the hearty menu boasts all kinds of dishes from traditional Phos, bun noodles, seafood, salads and meats. There’s also a strong veggie offering with a vegetarian platter, veggie tempura and deep fried tofu. 70-72 Kingsland Rd, E2 8DP, viethoarestaurant.co.uk Mien Tay This family run restaurant also has branches in Fulham and Battersea but all outlets serve traditional dishes local to the Mien Tay region in Southern Vietnam. The menu consists of familiar favourites like curries (served in clay pots) as well as more adventurous options including stir-fried frogs legs and stir-fried eel accompanied with lemongrass and chilli. This venue operates a BYOB policy with a corkage fee ranging from £2.50-£3.00 per person, depending on the day. 122 Kingsland Rd, E2 8DP, mientay.co.uk Green Papaya Xi'Viet This popular haunt combines traditional Vietnam cuisine with dishes of the region of Xi’an (the capital of Shaanxi Province in central China). Make sure you try their selection of Phos including the Pho Bo Tai (rare beef). Menu highlights include a Bun thit & Nem Nuong, which is vermicelli with BBQ belly pork and a spring roll. 97 Kingsland Rd, E2 8AG, green-papaya.com

Walk there via the Regents Canal path or take a bus from Essex Road. Upper Street is the main shopping street of the Islington district of inner north London, and carries the A1 road. It begins at the junction of the A1 and Pentonville Road and City Road, and runs roughly northwards past Angel Underground station, then past the Business Design Centre, then splits at Islington Green (where Essex Road, formerly named Lower Street, branches off), then past the Screen on the Green cinema, the town hall, ending at Highbury & Islington tube station on Highbury corner, where the A1 carries on as Holloway Road. The southernmost 500 metres (0.31 mi), from the junction to Islington Green, also carries the historical name of Islington's High Street. It contains many fashionable shops, pubs, restaurants and theatres, including the now closed Granita restaurant where Tony Blair and Gordon Brown were said to have made their deal on the future leadership of the Labour Party.

If you're looking for a posh restaurant option outdoors (covered/heated) look no further! Highly recommend but dress warmly. One of the huge successes of post-lockdown pivoting has been the Brat x Climpson’s Arch summer residency which has been extended throughout the winter. Dishes at the residency include: Grilled Crocadon Farm aged mutton chops, petit snap greens with smoked new season garlic, homemade ricotta and unfiltered olive oil Basque fish soup with Cornish velvet crabs A salad of slow-grilled pollock, laverbread and tomatoes. And, moving into winter, the menu will adapt to add roasted game rice, fried pork chops with anchovy & hay butter and winter tomatoes with aged mutton and grilled cep mushrooms. Drinks-wise, there will be bottled Bloody Marys, Pineapple Tepaches and Espresso Martinis and there will be a bookable private dining area too. see the stellar review by Marina O'Loughlin in The Sunday Times But if you'd rather the classic Brat, that remains open in Shoreditch (with a slightly new layout for social distancing).

For me, it's not just about the cakes, it's about the incredible salads! This is Yotam Ottolenghi's first restaurant, I love it. Ottolenghi Islington is easily recognised by the impressive cake display which occupies the entire front window of our shop. Beyond this, you'll find an abundant display of salads, Ottolenghi products and a wall filled with low-intervention wine - all of which we offer to take away or to eat in. Located opposite the Almeida Theatre, we are a pre-theatre favourite and a much-loved local institution to long-time regulars and first time guests alike. Our restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch on a walk-in basis only - so try to make it in early if you are planning a weekend brunch. We take reservations for dinner from 5:30pm. Seating in the restaurant is mostly on long, communal tables but there are a handful of tables for two. Please let us know at the point of booking if you have a seating preference.

On paper, Mare Street Market is a confusing place: a restaurant, café, wine bar and deli where you can record a podcast, buy a plant and shop for antique furniture. In reality though, it’s really just one big food hall-style dining room, with a couple of shops at the entrance and a café serving coffee and sandwiches by the door. The Open Kitchen takes up most of the space – it’s big, vibey and beautiful, with communal tables, soft couches and greenery everywhere you look. Don’t veer off-track and end up eating at the slightly more formal Dining Room section (you’ll see it – the ceiling is covered in antique chandeliers). Though it’s lovely, the food is better, and cheaper, in the main area. The menu has something for everyone: burgers, salads, wood-fired pizza and loads of hearty, vegetarian-friendly options. The pumpkin gnocchi with brown butter and crispy sage is a must-try (it was creamy and delicious; the perfect winter comfort food), followed by a crispy vegetarian scotch egg filled with a moreish, spicy green dahl.

Do you run or like to stretch your legs? From the studio, a loop including Shoreditch Park is about a 3k. (includes a mulched running track). Great views of the city's skycrapers & the site of Gainsborough Studios where Hitchcock movies were made. This is an urban London park and an unusal spot in London to have so much space. If your visit coincides with a Flyover, this is exact spot where aircraft sync their formation before getting to Buckingham Palace. This is the place to hire your Boris (Santander) Bike and explore the city. If you are interested in a guided walk/run or cycle to secret spots in London, get in touch for prices.

Do you run or like to stretch your legs or fancy a flat cycle without crossing roads? Leave the studio and take a right down Southgate Road to the Regents Canal. Follow the canal (left) east to Victoria Park, one of London's best and largest parks and complete a full loop (2 parts to the park). There are two cafes inside the park serving really incredible hipster food and plenty of free toilet facilities. From the studio, a loop of the entire park is exactly 10k although you can choose a slightly shorter route.

Every little helps at Tesco (ATM here). This is the site where Joseph Stalin, Vladimir Lenin and Leon Trotsky gathered together for the first time under one roof for the 5th Congress of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party in 1907 to argue for armed uprising against the Tzars.

Neighbourhoods

Broadway Market is an east London street running from London Fields to the Regent's Canal in the London Borough of Hackney. Walk east along The Regents Canal (20mins). Must see local food and clothing market on Saturdays - 120 stalls. Hipster central! Great food options all day and at night too. Arguably London’s hippest market, this Hackney stalwart is a weekend destination for fresh produce, vintage clothes and delicious street food. Broadway Market continues to thrive following its clever makeover nearly 15 years ago. This compact Hackney street, which neatly connects London Fields to the Regent’s Canal, has had a traditional fruit and veg market since the 1890s. But it went into steep decline in the ‘80s, and trade had all but petered out before the community relaunched it in 2004. Now taking place on Saturday from 9am-5pm, Broadway Market is a bustling hub for the Hackney hipsters and East End creatives who have settled down and started families. It now welcomes around 135 stalls selling a fabulous array of fresh produce, vintage clothes, flowers, coffee, books and groceries. There’s also plenty of delectable street food, including Deeney’s toasted sandwiches, Fin and Founder’s crab-cake burgers, Floris Bakery’s chocolate eclairs and the modern cult classic Yorkshire Burrito.

De Beauvoir Town and Haggerston named by The Times in 2023 as one of the best places to live in the UK. Hampstead and Highgate are hard to beat when it comes to peaceful gentility, but its properties — and lifestyle — are prohibitively expensive. Which is where De Beauvoir Town comes in: this secluded conservation area offers handsome late Georgian and early Victorian houses for (slightly) less exorbitant sums, as well as easy access to the edgy energy of east London. It shares the coveted N1 postcode with Islington but is largely in the borough of Hackney, within walking distance of Upper Street and the Almeida, where you can catch the best of new British theatre, but also of Dalston, for avant-garde gigs at Cafe Oto and the Grimeborn opera festival at the Arcola theatre. Newcomers are struck by the “wide, leafy streets, period houses and generous gardens” of this unashamedly urban village Many of the streets are closed to through traffic, so birdsong accompanies the soundtrack to life here. And beyond the handsome period looks and the chichi delis and cafés on Southgate Road there’s a strong-rooted community spirit. The epicurean epicentre of De Beauvoir Town is Southgate Road, where you’ll find the De Beauvoir Arms pub, the De Beauvoir Deli, the De Beauvoir Wholefoods . . . you get the idea. Liberty London and Soho House are clients of the Flower Appreciation Society, while the actress Keira Knightley has described the Towpath café as “one of the reasons I live in London”. Sit outside on a sunny day and enjoy its canalside views, or try Toconoco, a Japanese eatery where you can sip a black sesame latte (£3) while listening to young creatives chatting about their Bafta nominations. Grab lunch at Bread & Butter, between De Beauvoir Square and Kingsland Road, or there’s Planque, near Haggerston station, which dishes up adventurous French cuisine, and Map Maison on Kingsland Road which serves small plates and signature cocktails (barrel-aged mezcal negroni, £13). There are dozens of dining and drinking joints in nearby Hoxton and Dalston. For all your suspension and sourdough needs, the social enterprise Better Health runs a bakery and bikery offering placements to people recovering from mental ill-health. Then there’s CuppaPug, which has a distinctive take on pet therapy: for £12 an hour you can hug one of its six resident pugs.
