Food Scene

is a nice little café overlooking Tanygrisiau reservoir, popular with walkers and climbers as well as locals. Famous for huge cooked breakfasts and their Greek evenings, it’s not fine dining but is perfect to refuel after a long walk in the hills or around the reservoir. They have parking or you can walk from the house in 15 minutes. Dog friendly inside and out.

in Betws y Coed again gets very busy but is worth it. They’ve got a good outdoor seating area to watch the world go by or if you sit inside you can see the mini steam trains go by. They do great coffee and have a huge selection of loose teas, great cakes and nice big deli meals. They’re a very socially conscious business so everything is palm-oil free and they have a wide homemade and free-range menu. Dog friendly in their heated outside area.

– is where we call our ‘local pub’ although it’s about a 10 minute drive from the house (or for the more adventurous it’s about a 2 hour walk following the steam train line and river). It’s an old stone manor house which is now a great pub with good food and local ale. An elevated beer garden overlooks the valley for the summer but for colder times they do an incredible Sunday roast, normally with the log fires on and a live harpist. You should book for Sundays or during school holidays etc. Dog friendly inside and out.

is a great pub for a pub-lunch in Betws-y-Coed. They have a big covered area outside for sitting with dogs and it's heated too so very comfy. They don't take reservations and in the summer you'll likely queue for a table.

Again in Betws-y-Coed for a great handmade pizza with no palm oil and with all profits going to support charities fighting to end the palm oil trade.

Drinks & Nightlife

is a bit of a hipster pub but we find it more relaxed to enjoy a drink here if we’re in Porthmadog. It’s the pub of the local brewery called Purple Moose (Mŵs Piws in Welsh) which serves good pub food, most recipes using their own beer in some way. They don’t take bookings and can get a bit busy so you might have to wait for a table, especially if the rugby is on. Dog friendly inside.

in Blaenau town centre is a converted police station which is now a cosy bar, hostel and independent cinema which is definitely worth a visit for a movie or a chilled bite to eat or drink. They show a mix of mainstream movies, original films and classics mostly over the weekends.

again on the same site is Antur Stiniog, a large and popular mountain biking and outdoor pursuits centre. They run lots of activities out of the centre and rent all of the equipment you need to enjoy the centre or take off site – other nearby mountain biking is in Cwm Penmachno, famed as some of the best tracks in the UK

which goes in front of the house during the summer months is a great way to see some scenery across the valley as the heritage narrow gauge steam train travels from Blaenau Ffestiniog to Porthmadog in just over an hour. From Porthmadog you can also catch the Welsh Highland Heritage railway up to Caernarfon which stops at Snowdon Ranger and Rhyd Ddu, both starting points for climbing Snowdon.

Sightseeing

Gorgeous waterfalls, maintained well with steps and pathways to get some great photos. £2 per person entry through a turnstyle so be cautious of going with big dogs as they might not fit - I believe it's manned in the summer, but not the winter.

Amazing walk up to a reservoir which is steep to get up to but very flat once up there and a good dog walk. The start of a walk up to Cnicht as well for the more adventurous.
