In the 13th century, Llywelyn, prince of North Wales, had a palace at Beddgelert. One day he went hunting without Gelert "the faithful hound" who was unaccountably absent. On Llywelyn's return, the truant stained and smeared with blood, joyfully sprang to meet his master. The prince alarmed hastened to find his son, and saw the infant's cot empty, the bedclothes and floor covered with blood. The frantic father plunged the sword into the hound's side thinking it had killed his heir. The dog's dying yell was answered by a child's cry. Llywelyn searched and discovered his boy unharmed but near by lay the body of a mighty wolf which Gelert had slain, the prince filled with remorse is said never to have smiled again. He buried Gelert here. The spot is called Beddgelert.

Welsh castle and solitary guardian of Snowdonia’s Llanberis Pass Occupying a lofty, lonely spot overlooking the waters of Llyn Padarn, native-built Dolbadarn Castle was once a vital link in the defences of the ancient kingdom of Gwynedd. Most likely constructed by Llywelyn ap Iorwerth (Llywelyn the Great) in the late 12th or early 13th century, it stood watch over the strategic route inland from Caernarfon to the upper Conwy Valley.

The beach at Porth Dinllaen is a long sweeping sandy bay sheltered in the lee of Carreg Ddu headland at the northern end of the LLeyn peninsula. This beautiful little stretch of coast has largely escaped development and parts are now owned by the National Trust. The village of Porthdinllaen runs along the beach front and is car-free making it a delight for families. One of the best spots to take in the scene is from the Ty Coch Inn right on the waterside.

Llanfairfechan beach is mainly pebble beach when the tide is in but as it drops away a wide open stretch of sand is revealed. The beach here is backed by the Victorian seaside town of Llanfairfechan, which is overlooked by the 434m high Penmaenmawr mountain. A promenade with a pavilion provides a cafe and summer entertainment, while a dinghy park makes this beach popular with sailors. The beach is also a good spot for fishing and, a little further down the coast, birdwatching.
