Day Trips

Distance from Lavenham: 7.9 miles via A1141 Approx 16 mins. If you, too, would like to explore the beautiful Suffolk countryside, we recommend you take a drive to the picturesque village of Kersey, famed for its sheep farming and cloth making. We often lunch at the 13th century Bell Inn. On your way, you will pass through Brent Eleigh, a market town under the reign of Henry III, and Chelsworth. The village’s location in the rolling Suffolk countryside makes it an ideal place for walking. The church, dating from the 12th century, is worth a visit. CHELSWORTH Distance: 4.9 miles via A1141 The village of Chelsworth was first recorded in AD962 and has changed little over the centuries. It is often called the prettiest village in England, and the entire village is classed as a conservation area. Many of the houses were built in the 17th century.

Distance from Lavenham: 18 miles via A134 and B1068 CONSTABLE COUNTRY Flatford Mill was owned by the Constable family, and it is in this rural landscape, in East Bergholt, where John Constable was born in 1776 and where he painted his most celebrated works, including his most famous painting depicting a horse and cart crossing the River Stour. The scene of the painting remains recognizable today. The area has been designated an AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). ESSEX WAY AND STOUR VALLEY PATH There are many walks in Constable Country. The Essex Way and Stour Valley Path are two long-distance trails that run through the area, but there are lots of shorter footpaths and circular trails along which you can take in the sights of Flatford Mill, Willy Lott’s House, and other famous locations. ROWING BOAT We often hire a rowing boat in Dedham and enjoy a leisurely row along the River Stour.
