One of our two local pubs. Only open evenings and also Sunday lunchtime. Lovely old pub with old beams and roaring fires. Pretty garden too for a sunny evening. Known for their "two in one pies", half cauliflower cheese with either half steak and ale or many other meat alternatives, with a pastry topping - Yummy and very popular! Good election of beer and wine too. 15 minute walk

Look on their website for all the details but this is a very different place to eat offering superb organically produced vegetables and meat, mainly from their own farm in a modern and local meat supplier, in a modern, stylish barn. You have a set menu and shared plates on tables of about 8. You can either chat to your neighbours or keep to yourselves, anything goes! You get a starter, main meal and pudding (£23.50 for lunch and £27.50 for dinner). Thoroughly recommend a visit but need to book! Open lunchtimes (can sit outside in good weather by their herb garden) and evenings, again set times and set menus. 12 minutes drive

Under the food section but also a great family run garden nursery with a lovely atmosphere and good range of plants. The cafe is open all yearr and offers yummy lunches but the best reason for going is the cream teas and ginormous slices of cake! There is a conservatory area in the cafe but also a pretty garden to sit in. 10 minutes drive. Also the Lychgate Cutting Garden adjoins the nursery. Wonderful to walk around to pick your bunch of very reasonably priced flowers or buy a ready prepared bunch.

Totnes is a must to visit! Right on the River Dart where boat trips begin down the Dart to Dartmouth (the Round Robin day trip involves boat to Dartmouth, steam train to Paignton and open top doubledecker bus to Totnes . It is a quirky, somewhat bohemian town with a steep high street, ancient buildings, a castle and over 40 cafes to choose from! You can buy your essentials from mainly independent shops, as well as gifts. There are various markets held in the square and buskers are often found entertaining the shoppers. Or you may prefer some holistic therapy, massage or yoga. There is a museum and the Timehouse Muzeum for something very different and fascinating to visit! It's all here.

There are two car ferries and a passenger ferry crossing to Kingswear on the other side and offers opportunities for shopping, sight seeing, walking, eating and boat trips. Broadhempston is nestled amongst the hills and narrow lanes (yes you have to get used to those!) in a beautiful rural area of Devon. It is a tranquil, friendly village. There are many walks around and from the village, the two pubs already mentioned and the fantastic community shop for all your daily needs and coffee shop. The village hall also offers drop in yoga, pilates, and various other activities (view their website). Tennis courts available too (book at Village shop). Ronni at Fresh Start Health and Beauty (07815 997540) offers massages and beauty treatments and is located right in the centre of the village (pre book by appointments only). There is a playground for children and a new village orchard beyond the allotments.

Getting Around

You can reach Newton Abbot direct from London Paddington station in around 2 and a half to 3 hours. Like the Totnes train, its route has one of the most spectacular train routes you can travel on in the UK, running close beside the rivers and sea as it leaves Exeter towards Newton Abbot. It is also worth taking the slow train for a day trip from Newton Abbot all the way around to Exmouth following the rivers and sea most of the way. There are also coaches that terminate here.
