Outdoor activity

Frick Park is an awesome 640 acre city park, easily accessible from this place. You can walk or drive the 0.6 miles to the entrance at the Frick Environmental Center, where you can walk or jog on any of the plentiful (hilly) hiking trails. There are also two playground areas at the edges of the park (one is the "Blue Slide Playground" made semi-famous by rapper Mac Miller).

This water feature was one of our all-time favorite Pittsburgh activities when our kids were little. PPG Plaza downtown near the Point has pulsating fountains in the summer, that pulse water up to 15 feet high. FREE and really fun for kids (and kid-at-heart adults). Open to people in the evening and weekends, one of the strange rules is that you must wear regular clothes (NOT bathing suits), which is part of the fun for kids. The plaza becomes an ice rink in the winter, but we would definitely recommend the cute Schenley Park ice rink instead, if you are looking for outdoor ice skating!

Fun Museum

Great and unique museum that is a lot of fun to visit. Not as famous as the nearby Andy Warhol Museum but has really interesting installations and well worth a visit!

Only a 5 minute drive away, near the second large city park, Schenley Park, as well as the universities, Phipps conservatory has beautiful botanical gardens. A nice extra is the glass art there, remaining pieces from previous exhibits from artists like Dale Chihuly.

Better than you might think! Has so much in their exhibits and collections, all of which are well done - from Mr. Rogers, Heinz, and Pittsburgh sports to history of Pittsburgh's African American, Jewish, and other communities. If you like exploring the history of this city, a great place to visit!

Sightseeing

There are two famous "Inclines" in Pittsburgh that go up the side of the hill on the South side of the Monongahela River, both are ORIGINAL trains that were used to take workers from the top of the hill, where they lived, to the steel mills at the bottom. Our favorite is the Duquesne Incline (built 1877), where you can park at the bottom and take the Incline up, and we like this one best because at the top there are not only great views of "the Point" of downtown Pittsburgh where the three rivers come together, but there are great 'old' and 'new' photographs of Pittsburgh that really show the history of what it was like as a steel town.

This tower on the University of Pittsburgh campus has interesting 'Nationality' rooms, and a great view from the top. It is near the Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History, and of course, Pitt and Carnegie Mellon Universities in Oakland.

Shoes!

Since this won't show up in the standard Pittsburgh guides, wanted to add in one of the best shoe stores for both adults and kids! A Squirrel Hill long-time classic that is a five minute walk from the rental! Not inexpensive, for sure, but if you are looking for good shoes and actual salespeople who greet you and know their stuff, it's a throwback and has a large selection of shoes and sizes.

Food scene

There are many authentic Asian restaurants in Squirrel Hill. This little place serves great, authentic homemade noodles, while you watch. Always crowded, no reservations! Also known for its bubble teas.

This locally-owned small market is still called by many by its old name "Ruggeri's", even though it is now called the Food Shoppe. 1.5 blocks from the rental, next to the fire/police station (where you can still get a 50 cent "pop" from the vending machine outside!). The Food Shoppe is a good place to get prepared deli salads, etc, a sandwich, or an item you need for your cooking.

Theater and other entertainment

Trustarts.org has information on many of the theaters, including the Byham, Benedum, and the August Wilson Center. There's lots of great theater in Pittsburgh in addition, including the Pittsburgh Playhouse, City Theater, Pittsburgh CLO musical theater, and others, and Pittsburgh Ballet and other dance. City of Asylum also has interesting offerings, on the Northside of Pittsburgh. Also, see https://www.visitpittsburgh.com/things-to-do/arts-culture/music-performing-arts/
