Its name derives from the Gaelic language and means 'little bay', but when it comes to having an unforgettable weekend break, Oban is definitely a place which is big on things to see and do. Nestled on the west coast and surrounded by miles of dramatic shores and beautiful countryside, the seaside town is a great place for a holiday. Why not take a day trip to one of the surrounding islands? You could pack three into one day and take a tour of Mull, Iona and Staffa. Or visit Kerrera, the closest island to Oban, and enjoy a pleasant stroll along the island's track roads and explore the ruins of Gylen Castle, one-time stronghold of the MacDougalls of Lorne.

This small and historic distillery is located in the charming coast town of Oban. Oban Distillery takes it name from the town where the Highlands meet the Islands and nestles below the steep cliff that overlooks Oban. This coastal location is accurately reflected by the character of the Oban 14 year old single malt whisky. Visit Oban Distillery, meet knowledgeable guides and learn about the ancient art of distilling, then enjoy a complimentary dram of the Oban 14 year old West Highland Malt.

With all the hustle and bustle of the nearby tourist centre of Oban, Kerrera is in contrast very quiet, rural and offers lovely views of the surrounding coastal areas. Cars are banned on the island, except for the locals making it a walkers paradise, although good footwear is adviced because of some rough and boggy grounds. The island’s main function for many years was as a stepping-stone for transporting cattle from Mull to the mainland. In the north end of Kerrera is a prominent memorial commemorating David Hutcheson, one of the founders of the Caledonian MacBrayne Ferry service.

Spectacular views across Oban bay and the Islands. McCaig’s Tower is a prominent landmark in the resort town of Oban in Argyll on Scotland’s west coast. Built in 1897 by local banker John Stuart McCaig, the aim of the tower was to provide work for local stonemasons and a lasting monument to the McCaig family. The climb from the town centre to McCaig's Tower is well worth the effort when faced with the spectacular views across Oban Bay to the Atlantic Islands. The gardens inside the tower are well maintained and are a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of town life in Oban.
