St.Paul’s Catacombs are a typical complex of interconnected, underground Roman cemeteries that were in use up to the 4th century AD. They are located on the outskirts of the old Roman capital Melite (today’s Mdina), since Roman law prohibited burials within the city. St Paul’s Catacombs represent the earliest and largest archaeological evidence of Christianity in Malta.

1. The largest late Roman underground cemetery in Malta.
2. The earliest and largest archaeological evidence of Christianity in Malta.
3. A spiritual hub serving as a burial ground from Punic and Roman times.

The underground chapel of St. Agatha (The Ctypt) has unique frescoes, that were painted in 1200. Other 29 frescoes were painted in 1480. The main altar of the Crypt was built over another rock altar in 1666.
