“Friends first discovered this tiny chocolate factory on a trip to Duncan several years ago. Since then, they have ordered chocolates from them on a regular basis — Christmas, Easter — or just because. The couple who own the operation are charming and when we visited them the first time, they gave us a tour — believe me it didn’t take long!!! It just goes to show that great things come in small packages. If you are ever passing through Duncan, Rembrandt’s is a must stop. All the chocolates are handmade — both regular and no sugar added for folks who have sugar issues. It’s the best chocolate you will ever taste. Try it, you’ll love it!!!!”

At Emandare Vineyard you will often hear this phrase; “Wine is grown, not made.” Proprietors, Mike and Robin Nierychlo are firm believers that being responsible stewards of their land is what creates and captures the quality of their terroir driven wines. They are 100% estate grown, organically farmed, dry farmed and the vinification is allowed to take place naturally without commercial yeasts and other additives that dictate a recipe. The Society was originally conceived in the 1970s as a wooden boat-building centre but has expanded its role to become a maritime centre, a museum and a wooden boat workshop. We are home to the Cowichan Valley Dragon Divas, a group of cancer survivors who train and race their Dragon Boats right in Cowichan Bay.

When stepping into Mary Fox’s gallery, it’s difficult not to be struck by both the fine quality and sheer variety of work held within the space. The array of colours, textures, and sculptural elements of Mary’s pieces evoke the landscape in which she creates; clay, glass, and local sandstone, to name a few. Distinctive glazes remind the viewer of stormy seas and whitewash, textures of the ocean floor, swirling colours, elements of nature and imperfections. Mary’s studio is open Tuesday to Saturday, from 11 am to 5 pm. She is available on Sundays and Mondays by chance or by appointment.

The Arthur Vickers Gallery in Cowichan Bay features many hand-pulled, screen printed scenes of varying size and subject matter, and all are best experienced in person. The gallery also includes several works made using layer upon layer of 24 karat gold dust; a natural material that results in beautiful imagery and art pieces that have potential to last for many decades to come. There is a deep symbolism in this work, which becomes clearer the longer you speak with the artist.
