Whichever method you choose, you need to come prepared.

Crawford Notch

As far as waterfalls, our favorites are in Crawford Notch–heading Eastbound on 302. There's a couple right on the side of the road as you decend in Crawford Notch, but one of our top favorites is on the other side of the notch - Arethusa Falls. It takes about 2 hours total (roundtrip) to hike, and culminates with the tallest waterfall in NH. Worth the moderate hike! If you prefer something a bit easier, Ripley Falls, just before Arethusa, is a 0.5 mile trip each way, and also quite spectacular, especially in the late spring and early summer. In the North Conway area, Diana’s Baths on West Side Road is also always popular, and a very easy hike. Great spot for a dip in the cool mountain water, as well!

As far as waterfalls, our favorites are in Crawford Notch–heading Eastbound on 302. The Zealand Trail is mostly flat, and meanders through beaver ponds and very scenic woodland areas. It becomes steeper as you head towards the AMC “Zealand Hut,” and culminates in a small but very scenic waterfall. To get to the Zealand area, take a left at the driveway, then a left at the campground (1.3mi) and follow it to the very end, where you will find a parking area.

The Flume

South Twin Mountain

Highest peak of its namesake Twin Range, South Twin Mountain is also the eighth-highest mountain in New Hampshire according to the AMC list and the ninth-highest on the New England Hundred Highest list. The summit rocks offer long views in all directions, including the highest mountains in New Hampshire: the nearby Franconia Range to the west and southwest, and the Presidential Range off to the northeast. The view also includes the entire Pemigewassett Wilderness and the Sandwich Range beyond it. South Twin is a fairly popular day hike from the north, usually after passing over North Twin but also via the Gale River Trail to Garfield Ridge. The mountain is also commonly climbed as part of a longer hike after a night at Galehead Hut, located on a col to the west of the summit. Your best bet to see any views is to climb up the cairn and look out, but even then, the views are limited.

Tuckerman Ravine

he 4.2 mile class 2 Tuckerman Ravine Trail starts at the AMC Pinkham Notch Visitor Center (2050') and is one of the shortest, most scenic, and most popular trails to the summit used by both hikers and skiers. This well signed trail initially follows a dirt road (you will see snowcat tracks here during the winter) reaching Hermit Lake (3875') in 2.4 miles. Here you will find some shelters, a first aid cache, a ranger station, and catch your first glimpses of the Tuckerman Bowl which is a vibrant green during the summer and pure white during the winter. Head directly into the ravine and up the trail on the far (west) side where you will climb the headwall. In 1.2 miles you will reach Tuckerman Junction, an intersection of 5 trails (including one to the Lakes of the Clouds Hut). From here head north 0.6 miles to the summit complex (6288') During the snow free months, the top portion is a large class 2 rock field. he 4.2 mile class 2 Tuckerman Ravine Trail starts at the AMC Pinkham Notch Visitor Center (2050') and is one of the shortest, most scenic, and most popular trails to the summit used by both hikers and skiers. This well signed trail initially follows a dirt road (you will see snowcat tracks here during the winter) reaching Hermit Lake (3875') in 2.4 miles. Here you will find some shelters, a first aid cache, a ranger station, and catch your first glimpses of the Tuckerman Bowl which is a vibrant green during the summer and pure white during the winter. Head directly into the ravine and up the trail on the far (west) side where you will climb the headwall. In 1.2 miles you will reach Tuckerman Junction, an intersection of 5 trails (including one to the Lakes of the Clouds Hut). From here head north 0.6 miles to the summit complex (6288') During the snow free months, the top portion is a large class 2 rock field. Also within easy reach of the house is Franconia Notch - you probably drove through it on your way up. Head West on 302, and at the traffic light in Twin Mountain, take a left onto Rt 3 South. Some of our favorite hikes are between the Cannon Mountain ski resort, and the town of Lincoln. -Cannon Mountain’s aerial tramway is an easy way to get to the top and soak in amazing views which on a clear day span New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont and all the way into Canada. - The flume gorge is a beautiful moss-covered gorge, with a wooden walkway that takes you around past numerous rapids and small waterfalls. - The basin is also a very easy walk, even with little ones. The river forms a “swirl” and has carved really interesting waterslide-like formations in the granite. Very cool! - There are also many other hikes here, all very well indicated with parking facilities. You can’t go wrong!

The shuttle operates on weekends only from mid-September to mid-October. Reservations are strongly recommended.
