The water tower in Volunteer Park has amazing, 360-degree views of Seattle and includes some pictures of how Seattle used to look. It's also just a few feet from the Black Hole Sun sculpture (immortalized by the Sound Garden song of the same name) and the Asian Art Museum.

There is a road around it and trails through it for walking and running, there is a public swimming beach that has a lifeguard during the Seattle public school summer vacation, a playground for children, public restrooms, a drinking fountain and parking.

Trails are everywhere in this park and yet you are never more than .5 miles from civilization. You can park on Lake WA Blvd in Leschi and just cross the street to get to the park.

This park is the site of the former Seattle Gas Light Company gasification plant. Located just on the other side of the I-90 pedestrian tunnel this small park has public tennis courts and a playground for children. You can walk there by going through the tunnel or up and down Day Street (lots of stairs).

Here you can rent a canoe and paddle across the ship canal to the protected waters of the Arboretum. If you go here in August, bring something to collect blackberries as they line the shore. You get to paddle under the 520 freeway bridge which is pretty fun.

The Locks separate Lake Washington from Puget Sound. You can watch ships go up and down, check out the salmon ladder and picnic on the terraced grass on both sides of the ship canal. Bring a blanket to sit on.
