Food&Coffee Scene

Blessed by its enviable geographic location and a long history of culinary excellence, the Ljubljana food scene is exciting at all price points. Drawing inspiration from nearby Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia, restaurants in Ljubljana take advantage of local products. I am talking about artisan meats like prosciutto and pork, incredible fruits and vegetables including some of the world’s best wild mushrooms and very fresh seafood from the Adriatic. In Ljubljana, seasoned chefs cook traditional Slovenian food with a modern twist and younger chefs are returning to Slovenia’s capital city armed with fresh ideas acquired in some of the best kitchens in Europe and beyond. The result is a blending of traditional flavors and modern techniques at the best Ljubljana restaurants.

Genuinely revolutionising the Slovenian coffee scene and way more than just a café, Stow are specialty coffee roasters that source coffees directly from farmers around the world, have coffee academies where experts share the secrets to specialty coffee and, yes, Stow also have a café serving their own specialty coffees. At Stow we usually opt for a perfect espresso poured from the La Morzocco, the F1 of coffee machines, although coffee nerds will more like be impressed with the brew bar. And if Chemex or even coffee itself isn’t your thing, Stow also offer quality teas, tasty snacks and sweets, craft beers and boutique wines, whilst the café’s designer, showroom-like interior and the museum courtyard are one of the best hidden retreats in the city.

Coffee nerds this is the café for you in Ljubljana. Sandwiched amongst the cafes and bars on Krekov Trg (besides the funicular) Čokl has just a few tables on a pleasant terrace with even fewer tables inside though we’ve never had a problem getting a seat - the coffee nerd population of Ljubljana is smaller than Brooklyn’s we assume. The folks at Čokl take their coffee seriously - order an espresso and it often comes with a lecture on the bean’s origins - and given the chance the friendly proprietor of Čokl will have you sampling pour-overs, syphons and cold-brews.

This fantastic niche espresso bar is niche in more ways than one. For a start it’s literally a hole-in-the-wall café with a bit of street space, and the barista is also an architect so naturally what space there is is somewhat beautiful. It also exclusively serves specialty Colombian coffees, roasted for them locally and brewed to perfection, plus milky coffees, specialty brews and takeaways are also available. With an atmosphere more like a shrine that a café, coffee nerds should head here to talk beans as long as they like and possibly grab a good shot.

After a night out in Ljubljana you may wonder how the locals keep so trim and seem to shake off hangovers. Our own secret: healthy eating and smiles, both of which are in abundance at Barbarella Arkade Bistro. Located by the Central Market in Plečnik’s arcade, this fine café has a full vegan menu with soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers, biscuits and cakes, along with smoothies, teas, coffees (milk on request), juices, and beers. This is, truth be told, not only one of the few vegan cafés in town, but one of the best cafés overall. Chef Barbarella also offers a light and vibrant breakfast menu to start the day off right, no matter how your evening ended.

Plečnik's Arcade has long been one of our favourite places in Ljubljana, both for its gorgeous aesthetic appeal as well as the delightful local shops and cafés that call it home. The Grand Cafe Ljubljana is just another great reason to swing by. Their menu has something for everyone; hearty breakfasts, light mid-day lunches and superb evening dining, all prepared with locally sourced organic ingredients. Seafood lovers, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays are especially for you. Quality, super-fresh oysters and other ocean delights are the perfect way to welcome in the weekend. Assuming you’ve kept a little space, be sure to finish your meal with a slice of the iconic Torta Ljubljana.

Cafetino is perhaps the only café in town that wouldn't look out of place in one of New York's hipper neighbourhoods, not simply because it's cool, but because it's been around forever and is authentically cool without trying. Small, cramped and without WiFi (or even good mobile phone reception), people come here for the coffee, which is acquired from fair trade sources all over the world. Beans can even be bought to take home for about the same price per gramme that you'd pay for Illy. If you're looking for an evening tipple, be aware that they also have the best selection of craft gin in Ljubljana and over a dozen different Belgian beers.

A truly unique culinary and social venture, Skuhna was established by a Slovene non-profit to help better integrate the country's vibrant migrant community, while at the same time offering locals the opportunity to experience diverse foods and cultures from around the world. The restaurant is the only place in town to try authentic cuisine from places such Algeria, Zimbabwe and Iran. The project initially provided training for several full-time chefs, who now organise an ongoing programme of lunches, dinners, workshops and catering services from their full-time restaurant on Trubarjeva ulica. A full calendar of upcoming events, daily menus and lots of other info can be found on the official website and Facebook page.

Drinks & Nightlife

The majority of parties and nightlife are taking place at weekends. The most exciting are Friday nights when party people of all ages have fun at trendy night clubs and lounge bars. Several quiet daily bars turn into lively party premises with DJs at night. Excellent starting and meeting points are the ČinČin bar at the former Tobačna factory, Žmauc bar for artistic souls, a slightly remote Božidar for hipsters and Pritličje and Central Station.
Zmauc is much more than a bar, it's a locals hideout place, with street artist always making the bar a place for you to enjoy.

While 'Na zdravje!' is technically the Slovene phrase for 'Cheers!', owing to the fact that Slovenes are a multilingual bunch (especially in Ljubljana and even more so amongst the younger generation), you're almost as likely to hear the Italian 'Cin cin!' whilst hoisting your alcoholic beverage in the air. And you'll be doing so quite often when you spend an evening at the aptly named Čin Čin. Located in the premises of the former tobacco factory, the cool industrial chic space has high ceilings, an absolutely gorgeous bar and one of the most Instagrammed signs in Slovenia. During the warmer months, the outdoor space is just as attractive and equally packed. Check their Facebook page for upcoming concerts, parties and other events.

From the same team behind Magda, one of our favourite bars in town, Božidar is part bar, part club, part live music venue, and generally attracts Ljubljana's cool crowd. The venue itself is as unique as the clientele, as it's situated in a ground floor space of the Baraga Seminary building - a work of famed architect Jože Plečnik from the 1930s. Pretty much the only complaint we've heard is that it's “outside the centre”, but distances are very relative in Slovenia, and in reality it's only a few hundred metres from the north exit of the main railway station. The place is only open a few days a week, but there's always an eclectic programme of live music, DJ set and other events, like a regular ping pong tournament. Check their Facebook page for what's on.

Set in the premises of a former dive bar at the corner of the local Covered Market (Pokrita Tržnica), Magda manages the rare feat of being super cool, completely authentic and refreshingly unpretentious all at the same time. The minimalist interior features stripped down walls, custom-made furnishings and fixtures, and original Yugoslav-era brown floor tiling, which reminds us of something you'd find in the so-called ruin bars of Budapest or hippest neighbourhoods of Berlin. The diverse selection of largely German and Belgian beer is matched by the eclectic choice of spirits, from Japanese whisky and American rye to craft gin (and tonic) and the best Macedonian rakija, all of which the friendly barkeep will gladly explain in detail. What's more, perhaps the finest espresso in town is produced from specialty beans (also available for purchase) and an old-fashioned manual hand-pulled lever machine, while very original meat and cheese plates, breakfast croissant sandwiches, tins of seafood imported from Spain and fresh oysters on ice highlight the food menu. Truly unique and one of our personal favourites!

Shopping

One of the great things about Ljubljana is the fact that you can shop the old-fashioned way, strolling the city centre’s streets, ducking in and out of any number of high street shops, local brands and unusual little boutiques. The main shopping streets in the city centre are Mestni and Stari Trg at the base of Castle Hill, Trubarjeva, Wolfova Ulica and Miklošičeva on the opposite bank. There are also plenty of shops in the grid of streets between Slovenska Cesta and the river. If you'd like a mall experience however, head out to the gargantuan BTC City, a couple of kilometres from the city centre on the road to Maribor. During the warmer months, there is an art market going on every Saturday along a part of the Ljubljanica riverside where you can buy beautiful and original paintings, jewellery or ceramics. Every Sunday, there is an antique flea market where you can admire interesting objects with historical and collectors value.
This shopping city just 10 minutes from the city center offers everything a person can wish for, as you can shop on the local food market or take a walk in the giant mall offering everything from H&M to top designer stores.

One of Slovenia's most typical traditional dishes, štruklji is usually served as a side, but takes centre stage here with more than 20 different varieties of the delightful doughy mainstay offered. Most often translated as 'dumpling', štruklji is a unique type of rolled pastry that can have either savoury or sweet fillings, and is also very versatile when it comes to the cooking method. At Moji Štruklji they take things to the next level with enough choices to try something new almost every day of the month, including some modern innovations such as dough infused with fruits and a selection of gourmet options like chocolate and vanilla. Located on the west bank of the Ljubljanica River, Zoofa is a cooperative of local designers and craftspeople, with a selection of women’s clothing and accessories from more than two dozen local creators. While each collection is distinctive, and range from the colourful and sporty to the more demure and sophisticated, they are united by a sense of style, the kind that is so often seen on the streets of central Ljubljana. In addition to its permanent designers, Zoofa also functions as a pop-up store. Spanning the Ljubljanica in the very heart of the city, the infamous Dragon Bridge is an Art Nouveau/Vienna Secession masterpiece dating from 1901. Named for four obvious reasons in the guise of mighty dragon statues at each corner, the structure is a superb example of an early reinforced concrete bridge and as such is exciting for both lovers of art and of architecture. The triple-hinged arch bridge, which measures just over 33m in length, was designed by the Italian engineer and architect Giorgio Zaninovich (Jurij Zaninović, 1876–1946), and features a further 16 smaller dragon statues which together help its reputation as one of the most photographed structures in Ljubljana. Not surprisingly, the Dragon Bridge is the recipient of many legends, the most charming of them all in our opinion being that when a virgin crosses, the dragons wag their tails.

Not surprisingly, the Dragon Bridge is the recipient of many legends, the most charming of them all in our opinion being that when a virgin crosses, the dragons wag their tails.
The political centre of modern Slovenia, this square houses the brutalist 1960 parliament building, two equally delicate office towers and the Cankarjev Dom Cultural Centre. The western tower is home to some half-dozen embassies, while the eastern tower is the headquarters of Slovenia's largest bank, NLB. A small park to the west contains some large sculptures celebrating heroes of Slovenia's past and are worth taking a peek at.

Known to locals by its Slovene acronym NUK, the library was originally established by Empress Maria Theresa in 1774 and moved to its current Plečnik-designed building in 1941. Aside from serving as one of the country's central educational and cultural institutions it's also considered one of the prolific architect's most monumental works, and is a must see for visitors to Ljubljana. Highlights include the somewhat schizophrenic brick and stone façade, the colonnaded central staircase and the massive main reading room. A planned expansion on nearby Zoisova Cesta has been in the works for nearly 20 years, but has been plagued by a host of problems, most notably caused by the discovery of Roman ruins, which is a surprisingly common occurrence in and around the city.

Rising gently above Park Tivoli are the wooded slopes of Rožnik Hill, which is actually comprised of a number of modest peaks and provides a green corridor stretching right to Ljubljana’s northwest fringe. A popular spot for walking and mountain biking, paths crisscross the entire woods, the most interesting amongst them being the Jesenko Path, a 3km trail passing 30 local tree species. Alternatively, take the path up behind the Tivoli Mansion towards Rožnik’s highest peak Šišenski and the far more interesting Cankar's Peak, named after Ivan Cankar, the historic Slovenian author who periodically stayed at the inn on the hill. The popular Pri Matiji inn dating from the early 19th century is still open and is a great place to have a hearty lunch or a cup of tea and flancat, a tasty doughnut-like pastry. Also on the hilltop is a quaint church and, on April 30, the arrival of thousands of locals who gather here for a traditional bonfire party or kresovanje.

There's nothing nicer on a warm sunny day in Ljubljana than heading to the beach. No, not Slovenia’s coast or Croatia’s popular seaside, for here folks in town head just south of the city centre to Ljubljana beach, which isn’t really a beach, but even without the swimming it’s pretty nice sitting on the banks of the Ljubljanica with a drink in hand. The original Ljubljana beach (or plaža in Slovene), a series of steps along the river bank stretching from the corner of Eipprova ulica below Trnovski pristan, was designed by Jože Plečnik who built half the city and also lived nearby. A short stroll further on from town and on the castle side of the river in Prule, is another riverside public space, Špica. Expanses of wooden terraces perfect for a picnic and lounging around on make it another great spot to chill out, and there's even a small playground for kids. Špica also houses a pleasant café offering refreshments all day, and next to the park is the dock for Ljubljana’s flotilla of boat bars and tour boats.
