Sightseeing

Once at the top, you can enjoy the most stunning views of Athens! You can also visit the St George church at the top, watch the National Flag Ceremonial at every sunrise and sunset, or enjoy the great concerts that take place almost every night during the summer at the Lycabettus theatre (half way to the top). You can go up the hill either on foot taking the stairs from Loukianou street, or the road up from Sarantapichou street, or by cable (teleferik) at the end of Aristippou street.

Spot the little white column (in Greek called "kolonaki") on the east side of the square. The story goes centuries back, when the big landowners' properties of Athens where marked with little white columns, "kolonakia", which determined their limits. This column is the last remaining one in Athens and it was found initially at the area of Evangelismos (the Hospital) and transferred to the Filikis Eterias Square, giving the name to our whole neighborhood.

One the most historic and culturally rich squares of Athens. From the ancient times, Roman Emperor Adrian built at this area the Athens water supply installations (in Greek called "dexameni") which obviously gave the name to the square and still used today. They are open to the public only once a year, on January 6th in the morning. In the modern times, during the 19th and 20th centuries Dexameni became the daily meeting point for many of the greatest modern Greek writers, poets, artists and philosophers. You can see the sculpted stone with the head of the great Greek writer Alexandros Papadiamantis (who lived nearby) and the statue of the Nobel prize winner poet Odysseas Elytis.

Entertainment & Activities

The open air cinemas of Athens not only are they classified monuments, but also they are a unique summertime experience! DEXAMENI is one of the two open air cinemas of Kolonaki, locagted on Dexameni square. The other one is ATHINAIA, located on Charitos street opposite to Baila, and I highly recommend both of them to those who love spending a part of their evening to the movies.

Parks & Nature

Quiet, green and a national monument, the National Garden dates from the 19th century, and was initially designed for the King and the King's family, as an extension to the Palace which is located on Irodou Attikou Street (today it is the President's Palace). It contains thousands of species of Greek flora, a small shelter for Greek fauna, a little Plants Museum, a Roman Villa antiquities, a public open air kinder garden, a small coffee shop, and lots of beautiful spots to rest.
