Food Scene

Our local bar and eatery showcasing 100% New Zealand food and drink from small artisan producers. Little Jimmy is a casual, down-to-earth bar and eatery where you can kick back and relax. Our kids (and we) were blown away by their desserts, a little indulgence once in a while.

Great local Japanese diner with super friendly staff and wonderful sushi dishes and exciting teppanyaki, all done to high standard quality and made fresh every time. This is my Mum's favourite place to eat when she visits this house from Sydney.

Awesome restaurant when you want some exotic Thai food. We're pretty fussy with Thai food, as we visit Thailand several times a year and this place hits the mark. Plus they have attentive service, innovative Thai dishes and a kids play area.

From a Korean born person, this is my recommendation to you. Great NZ meats with traditional Korean flavours grilled at your table with a charcoal BBQ, it doesn't get better than this. If you have a group of 4 or more, make sure you book a private booth in advance. Lively atmosphere and it's always busy with service that looks after you.

We go to Taksim each time we visit Auckland as it is 5 minutes away and Samim the owner and staff are generous with their service and food. We like to sit outside and enjoy the evening and occasionally have a shisha/hookah with a glass of NZ wine. They have a great menu and we are yet to try all their food, we're slowly working on this list. To date we have tried their kebabs, Turkish pizza, mezze platter, moussaka, lamb chops, lamb shank, etc.

Cheap and cheerful Chinese restaurants nearby (7 minutes drive) near the corner of Dominion Road and Balmoral Road. I would park the car in Wiremu Street but be mindful the area can be busy for parking. There are plenty of places to select from including Barilla Dumplings, Cinta Malaysian, Golden BBQ Noodle House, Jolin Shanghai, Shaolin Kung Fu Noodle, Spicy House, Cafe Manchuria.

Sightseeing

Any visitor to Auckland must go to the Mt Eden volcano summit for a stunning view over Auckland Harbour. If you are lucky, you might catch a Maori ceremony. Check out Heaven to Earth walking tours. Best to do this on a day with blue skies.

A trip to Auckland must include a day trip to Waiheke Island, on a bright sunny day. You catch the ferry from Down Town Ferry Terminal (park your car in Downtown car park or catch public transport towards Britomart) and it is about a 35 minute ride away. We like going on a Saturday to start the day with an early lunch at the Oyster Inn or a wander through the Waiheke Markets. If we have the car with us using the Sealink service, we drive to the best spot in Auckland at Man O'War vineyards, occasionally playing cricket on the lawns, dipping our feet in the clear waters, whilst grazing on a cheese board. We then work our way back to Oneroa stopping by beautiful beaches and other vineyards.

Driving along Tamiki Drive along the Eastern suburbs of Auckland is magical, with clear blue waters and Rangitoto as your backdrop. We like to stop by Mission Bay and have Belgian mussels and beer, walk along Kohimarama beach, look at the view from many different angles and have a meal at Moretons, Porch Bar & Eatery or St Helier Bay Cafe & Bistro, whichever has a nice sea view window seat. If it is all too difficult, a takeaway coffee and a seat on a park bench overlooking the sea is perfect.

We often drive to Titirangi for its village atmosphere and shop for handcrafts and souvenirs. A beautiful day-trip.

Parnell is closeby with restaurants and bars. It tends to draw an older clientele as it is tucked away in a mainly residential area and close by the Auckland Museum. We also like to go there in the daytimes to look at antique and art shops, with the occasional stop to have a coffee, lunch or glass of wine.
