Historical African-American Parish. Church founded in 1841 by free African Americans, resulting in the historical War of the Pews. Stop by and pay reverence to the Tomb of the Unknown Slave. A shrine consisting of outsize marine chains welded together with shackles and iron balls to form a huge, fallen cross. The grim, rusting monument standing outside the church honors those countless slaves who perished uncounted and unnamed.

Since it’s dedication in 1842, St. Augustine has been a church of the free black citizens of New Orleans, welcoming both free and slave as worshipers

Catholic or not, this is a sight to see! Beautiful and historic church that was founded by and for black citizens and slaves in 1842.
