The lake was formed after the recession of the Bohinj glacier. It is up to 2120 m long and up to 1380 m wide, its maximum depth being 30.6 m and tectonic in origin. After the last Ice Age, the Bohinj glacier deepened the natural tectonic hollow and gave into its present form.
Views across the lake pretty much all along the lake shore promenade. If you only do one thing in Bled, take a stroll around the lake.
The biggest attraction of the Lake Bled area is Lake Bled itself. With its postcard-worthy church on a small island, a medieval castle perched high atop a rocky cliff and some of the highest peaks of the Slovenian Alps as backdrops, it is one of the most enchanting places in Europe.
“This is a lovely medieval castle built on a precipice above the town of Bled, overlooking Lake Bled. The views from the castle over the lake and town to the mountains beyond are really spectacular. You have to pay an entrance fee to get into the grounds of the castle, but it is well worth it. The museum in the castle is really interesting and there is a blacksmiths forge, old printing room and a small chapel. Throughout the year, but especially in the summer months, the castle hosts numerous interesting events.”
“The Radovna river cuts the Vintgar gorge deep between the hills of Hom and Boršt. The gorge is flanked by steep slopes overgrown with beech forests. It was discovered in 1891 by Mr. Jakob Žumer, mayor of Gorje, and Mr. Benedikt Lergetporer, a cartographer and photographer from Bled. Both were amazed by the beauty and the mysterious character of this natural attraction. Local people, however, have always viewed the gorge with awe and respect.”
“Pizzeria Rustika is located in the oldest part of Bled, under the Bled rock and in the immediate vicinity of St Martin’s Church. Tasty pizzas, salads, sandwiches, hamburgers and ‘cevapcici’ are served in a pleasant ambience, in summer on the open terrace and in winter in the warm interior. They also offer take-away food.”
“Triglavska Roza gift shop (gift and souvenir shop) Address: Ljubljanska cesta 27, 4260 Bled Opening Hours: Apr 15-Oct 15 daily 8:00-18:00; Oct 16-Apr 14 daily 8:00-16:00”
“Straza is a 634-metre hill above the beautiful Lake Bled. A chairlift takes visitors to its peak (€4 for adults, €2 for children 6–14 y.o.), from where stunning views of the lake, the castle and the surrounding mountains of the Slovenian Alps unfold. The beautiful forest on top of Straza hill is also the setting of the Bled Adventure Park, which offers visitors the chance to enjoy a range of adrenaline-pumping activities. For an additional rush of adrenaline, the summer sledding track takes guests back to the valley. ”
