Experts in French cashmere, this 30-year-old label produces the ultimate multipurpose scarf: soft enough to cover your eyes, warm against your neck without irritating your skin, and stylish. They’re all accessibly priced and super-high in quality. They have a range of over 4,000 colors available. I never waver from my tried-and-true red, but I will explore their cherry red, blood red, or classic red (but never red disguised by stripes or checkered print).

This luxury fashion house’s range of iconic scarves and carrés (square silk scarves) are made from the finest materials. The wool and cashmere come from the best farmers and weavers around. And the finishings are immaculate, right down to the braided fringe, which never unravels, even with long wear. The very deep, almost Bordeaux red scarf is my favorite. On one side, there’s a bit of pink, and on the other, violet. And then, right at the edge, you see the Hermès red.

The city’s legendary and elegant department store carries so many scarves by so many brands. I’m a big fan of the ones by Balthazar, the shop’s own prêt-à-porter label. While it isn’t luxury-grade wool, it’s good quality and very warm. It also carries personal significance: Carla Bruni-Sarkozy gave me one of their scarves as a gift after an interview! This is a rare place where all of the scarves are out on display. At other shops, you often have to ask salespeople to show you each scarf, since they are almost always stored in drawers.

One of the city’s leading department stores, Galeries Lafayette has an annex location beneath the Montparnasse Tower that is often free of crowds. I love coming here for scarf shopping, as it’s smaller in size and frequented mostly by locals. Don’t miss the Christmas market that sets up shop around the store during the holiday season. For the rest of the year, come to shop and then head up to the 56th floor of the Montparnasse Tower for a drink at the Ciel de Paris with unbeatable views of the city.

A small shop up in the 18th arrondissement, run by a lovely artisan who makes all kinds of scarves with imagination. Her selection is not for purists—you won’t find a classic red scarf here—but I like what she does with wool and cashmere. It’s simple and refined. The shop is tiny and looks more like an artist’s atelier than a boutique! The owner also sells to wholesale buyers, so feel free to go in and negotiate your price just as they might.

This Indian-inspired boutique features square silk and wool scarves and cashmere stoles in beautiful colored fabrics with embellishments like fringe. The selection is lovely, though solid-color scarves are rare. Each piece has a bit of a hippie vibe and can be worn in a loose knot or completely wrapped around as if you were in the desert. Parisians wear scarves all year round, and this is a great shop to pick up the right option for summer since their fabrics are light and suitable for hot weather.

With British-inspired scarves, gloves, and socks at reasonable prices, Bruce Field has an outpost inside the Gare Montparnasse that’s open all the time. I like being able to pick up something new five minutes before I catch my train, because often I want to pick up something for a trip before I go but lack the time. The scarves here aren’t going to last you forever, but with such modest prices, they make nice add-ons.
