My kids love the Goat Barn to pet the goats and explore the beautiful property. Take the trail across from our house (you must go through the woods for about 10 ft at Bonclarken ln and then you will see the trail) - this takes you into town or you can cut through Flat Rock Playhouse to reach the parking lot for Carl Sandburg's house. After morning exploring, head to lunch at Hubba Hubba BBQ (seasonally open) or Village Bakery (always delicious with sandwiches and pizza).

If you want a close by hike to get your heart going, this trail is located close at Carl Sandburg's home. The views open up on a big rock face somewhat blocked by trees but fun to explore. Older kids can handle the trail but stick to the goat barn if you have younger kids as the trail has a steady incline.

Drive the parkway or stop and hike... my personal favorite is Black Balsam hike, where my husband proposed but it’s short trail that my kids can handle too with beautiful views!

So many great hiking trails - head through Pisgah National Forest and up... one of our favorite trails is here where my husband proposed. We have taken our kids here several times and the hike is appropriate for many to get a great view after a little bit of effort.
