Another way to get out of Anchorage is by local air services. Raven has destinations all of the state. While some can be fairly cheap ($49ow to Kenai) others can be quite expensive ($1,200 to Dutch Harbor), there is a good possibility your destination has a rental vehicle to explore even further.

Awesome heated botanical garden with many varieties of flowers and rare plants. Great place to walk around in both the spring and winter. Highly, highly recommended!
