Fun things with kids

Fun things to do with the lids that won’t break the bank.
Just 5 km from Cessnock CBD, the Kitchener Village boasts a park with some punch! A great playground, flying fox, dam that you can picnic by or walk around, southern “beach” to play in and history galore. The epic Poppet and details of this old mining town are really interesting. The pub (no dogs) is a beauty with a surprisingly good bistro is 200 metres away. Us adults usually go there and have a quiet drink whilst we wait for our (older) kids to finish playing. A great and cheap afternoon.

This is a fairly new quality playground/park that is close to the centre of Cessnock Town. It has a lovely elevated round-trip walk that gives you a good view of the town. There are bbqs and picnic tables, but we usually like to just get a pie from old mate bakery on the main street of Cessnock. The playground is great and there us an under 7s bike track and full skate park.

A 30 min drive through pretty villages and farm land, the historic village of Wollombi is a surprisingly good place to have lunch and spend the afternoon down by the river. The winding back road from Sydney makes this place popular with motor bikes. Take a footy as there is plenty of space in the flood prone areas down by the (dog friendly) pub. Often a band Sunday arvo. The historic village is well signposted. Make sure you go to the rock pools down the bottom of the nature trail. Grab an ice-cream from the local store and visit the art gallery. Stop at some wineries on your way back.

What is the go with Cessnock?

Cessnock “City”comprises a number of old workers villages that sprang up around the coal mines which were opened in the early 1900’s and operated manually by 1000s of men. “The Nock” is still struggling with multi generational low socio demographics caused by closure of the mines in the ‘50s. Recently, horses, grapes and tourism have helped change the region - but not necessarily the towns themselves - the money tends to stay out in the tourist attractions. This creates a disparity of wealth in the area.
