Food scene

This is a Pittsburgh staple! Primanti Brothers started serving sandwiches out of a cart back in the days of the steel mills. In order to accommodate the long hours and short breaks imposed by the mills, they had the novel idea to just put the whole entire meal on a sandwich! The mills are mostly gone, and labor laws have created an actual lunch hour for workers now, but the restaurants still serve their classic all-in-one sandwiches. There are locations all over the city, but if you want to visit the original head over to the Strip District for a great lunch and an afternoon of Pittsburgh history!

One of Pittsburgh's favorite breakfast spots, serving everything from Crepes to traditional breakfast and brunch favorites. There are several locations throughout the city but you have to get there early because there is almost always a line regardless of what location you're at or what day of the week it is!

This winery is about an hour north of the city depending on traffic, but if you love wine it is 100% worth the trip. They have a large restaurant that takes indoor reservations, and a beautiful first-come-first-serve outdoor seating and bar area when weather permits. Not only is their wine variety unbeatable, the food is outstanding, all the way down to their special house dipping oil.

Another great brewery option closer to "home." They have a dog-friendly outdoor seating area, and a large variety or beer on tap. The menu has been restricted due to COVID, so if you are a picky eater you may want to stop for food ahead of time. However they do have a variety of bar staples to munch on

A great brewery option if you're looking to stay in the South Hills. Huge outdoor seating area when weather permits, and you can also order Crowlers online to pick up and take home. They have a wide variety of beer on tap in addition to several well-stocked coolers of the best that other local breweries have to offer. They also allow you to "make your own 6-pack" to bring home for later. Their food menu was restricted during COVID, but still covers the basics of what you would expect to find in a gastropub

If you love mead, you will not be disappointed by Apis. They have by far the largest variety of mead in the area, offering flights, full pours, and bottled mead to take home. They don't serve their own food, but host food trucks 3-4 days a week (schedule on the website) throughout the spring, summer and fall months

Things to do

Located on the North Shore, the Water Steps are a great way to spend a hot afternoon. You can wade through them, and if you're small enough even "swim" a little bit. Stroll the heritage trail that lines the North Shore and stop here for a quick cool-off while enjoying the city views on a sunny afternoon!

This is a local favorite nestled in the South Hills just outside of Allegheny county. They have a fresh market with seasonal favorites year-round, a small wine shop that offers tasting and sells exclusively Arrowhead wine, and a small cidery called Arsenal Cider House. In the fall months they offer hay rides and have a pick-your-own-pumpkin patch.

Pittsburgh's own little "Coney Island." This is a great family spot, they have rides to accommodate the smallest of riders all the way to the thrill seekers. During the fall months, they transform the park into one giant haunted attraction. If you're here around the holidays, check out their light shows!

Neighborhoods

Parking is tight here, but it's well worth a bit of hassle if you like to wander unique neighborhoods. This neighborhood has been painstakingly revitalized over the last decade or so and is one of the most unique and artsy the city has to offer. It is located within walking distance to the National Aviary and the Allegheny Commons greenspace, both of which offer a nice respite from the hustle and bustle of the city's North Side neighborhoods.

If you have to cross a river, give yourself extra time

Pittsburgh is famous for its three rivers, which create three distinct areas of Pittsburgh: The North Hills, The South Hills, and Downtown. On a map, these areas seem close and relatively easy to travel between, but in practice that is not the case. In fact, any local will tell you they actively avoid crossing rivers.. this is a bit extreme as all three areas of the city are unique and boast their own gems to be discovered, just make sure if you're going to cross a river (especially around rush hour) you give yourself plenty of extra time to get there!
