Food scene
This is a firm favourite of mine and it's about 25 minutes drive from the house - turn left onto the Bowness road at Newby Bridge and then right up a steep hill just before Fell Foot park and keep going! It's a 16th century inn with a fabulous range and stunning views over the Winter valley from the patio and the snug room. The food is excellent. It's great to combine a visit to the Masons with a walk up Gummer's How for spectacular views over Lake Windermere. If you don't want to climb, you could combine it with a visit to Fell Foot Park, a National Trust site at the foot of Lake Windermere.

A family-run pub in the centre of Ulverston with a great atmosphere and regular live music sessions (Tuesday night folk sessions, Thursday night jazz, Friday nights local bands). Also the only pub in the area to serve exclusively (and very good) vegetarian food!

I love this aquarium (situated at Lakeside next to the steamers / steam train station) as it includes plenty of local freshwater aquatic life amongst its attractions with really interesting displays and activities for children. You could combine a visit to the aquarium with a trip on the Haverthwaite Steam Trains / Windermere Steamers.

It's a good place for a walk even if it's raining as you're sheltered by the trees and the views of the tarn are always gorgeous. You can walk right round the tarn too, which gives a sense of achievement!

High Dam Tarn
I love High Dam for a walk and a swim if the weather's good. It's a short drive from Ulverston, turning left after the Haverthwaite steam trains and then left again at the Whitewater Hotel. It's a good place for a walk even if it's raining as you're sheltered by the trees and the views of the tarn are always gorgeous. You can walk right round the tarn too, which gives a sense of achievement!

Loughrigg Tarn is absolutely spectacular, as you can see from my photo! It's a bit more off the beaten track and not nearly as busy as the nearby hubs of Windermere and Grasmere. It's an easy walk round the tarn and good for strong swimmers - it shelves off quite quickly. If you want a bit more of a walk and even better views, you could go up onto Loughrigg Fell. A trip up to Loughrigg Tarn could be combined with a meal / coffee and cake at the fabulous Chesters by the River Cafe in Skelwith Bridge.

Ulverston's landmark, this is a short but rewarding walk from Ulverston town centre. On a good day, you get fabulous views over the Lakeland fells, across Morecambe Bay and over to Lancashire and Yorkshire. If visibility is really good, you can even see the Welsh mountains.
From Cooper's Cottage, head out of Burlington Street and turn right onto Hart Street. Walk up Hart Street until the road forks, taking the road on the left up to Ford Park. Go through the park and past the cafe and the walled garden keeping going until you reach the gates at the bottom of Hoad Hill. You can follow the path which goes up the side of Hoad - when this runs out you just go onto the grassy part until you get to the top. You can do a circular walk following the gravelly road and then a path through a gate on your left back down into town.
