Food Scene

Of course, Clapham hasn’t escaped the small plates revolution. Soif does them well. Think cured sea trout with creme fraiche, horseradish and dill or spiky fried artichokes mellowed by aioli, and fresh and bouncy Devon crab doughnuts. Soif is a wine bar before it’s a restaurant, however, and it’s the tasting nights which make the place most endearing — and impressive. The evenings drift from the Jura region to the Languedoc; whistlestop tours paired with some of those memorable, seasonal and inventive small plates.

French chef Yoann Chevet runs Sinabro with his Korean wife Sujin Lee. It’s one of many hangouts on Clapham’s busy Battersea Rise, and does a five-course tasting menu for £49. In 2017, Sinabro celebrated its three-year anniversary with a menu that began with sourdough and seaweed pesto, navigated through egg parfait, beetroot cured salmon, halibut and pearl barley, and a very bistro-style lamb; culminating with a chocolate tart. Often, Sinabro appears fiercely traditional, but there are often fun twists. The service is also reliably excellent.

The Rookery has a New York feel to it — its spiral staircase, glass front and general urban chic recall Brooklyn. The menu, however, is totally London, a blend of European styles and British produce. Look out for barbecued sardines, cured sea trout with horseradish and samphire, and if there’s risotto on the menu, make room. The pasta at The Rookery is also a joy, perhaps speckled with cheese, nuts, truffle or lashings of butter. And as autumn sets in, look out for slightly haphazard, bold and brilliant game pies. Suet pastry abound.

The Dairy’s menu, stockpiled with smoked eel, bone marrow and charred leaves, is happily seasonal, with an earnest but unpretentious nod to provenance. Here, Robin Gill has crafted the foundations of an institution. The £48 tasting menu is a must: expect dishes like mackerel, gooseberry and lovage; and truffled Baron Bigod, the much-loved Suffolk ‘brie’ that shouts for seeds and sourdough. Afterwards, stay for heady late-night cocktails. Recover with the impressive Sunday brunch.

Drinks & Nightlife

There are two Jam Trees in London and Clapham’s is particularly special. The bar has everything from DJs, to Chesterfields, to a secret restaurant hidden behind a bookshelf trapdoor. Throughout the summer they offer free hog roasts and student friendly happy hours which is good news for most of the city’s population. The jam theme runs throughout the bar it’s essential to have at least one shot from their cute little jam jars. Most importantly a good service and eloquently executed cocktails provides the formulae for one of the best all round nights in Clapham.

Everything in this bar is inspired by the fictional villain mastermind Fu Manchu including the lights, food and especially the cocktails with their devilish alcohol content. The bar turns into a small rave late at night with a low brick ceiling that hangs over the dance floor making it very easy to indulge in their Secret Essence of the Poppy Hill cocktail and embrace the unusual atmosphere.
