Digging into Cedar Key

Food Scene

Darrin and I love food, cooking it, eating it, letting others cook it and eating their food. Our favorite thing to do on vacation, especially in exotic locales, is to take a cooking class. Sadly, we have no cooking school in Cedar Key. The food scene here is a bit...how do you say...monochromatic? The town is rich in fresh Gulf seafood--Grouper, Redfish, Sea Trout, Oysters, Scallops, Clams and Shrimp--all come from these waters and some restaurants buy and serve local seafood. All of them claim to. That's a fight we aren't yet ready to have. Here's our take on the restaurants, most of which we frequent, in town:
This is Island life meets fresh seafood in a family-friendly, upstairs location with a view of Atseena Otie Key. Locals mingle with visitors around full bar and the many boisterous tables where the food is exceptional and the prices are super fair. Try the Steamer's Salad, blackened, a local fav, or my personal go-to: the soft shell crab sandwich: It's a whole fried crab between two pieces of bread! LeAnn will mix you a mean Hurricane.

This is a don't miss dining experience, folks. If you're here Friday-Saturday nights, and food is something important to you, the Peter Stefani's dinner house is essential to your Cedar Key Getaway, relaxed fine-dining, French and Cajun-inspired creations, his own farmed clams, pastas, braised meats, and what Darrin declares: "The best Cesar Salad in the world!" Monday nights is a special locals dinner with a cash-only special menu. Sunday the place opens for an elegant brunch on the water. Glass walls and linen tables. Lovely. Excellent.

Mike and Laura Duncan operated a seafood restaurant in Marco Island, FL, Marker 8.5, which was obliterated by Hurricane Irma in September 2017. This restaurant opened in 2018. Great views. We ate there for the last time in early 2019.

83 West is a great place to stop for lunch or an early dinner. This is an open air place with great views of the Gulf and Atseena Otie Key. Shrimp and fish tacos, gator and scallop kabobs, Redfish and chips are favorites, but if something on the well balanced menu appeals, order it. Protip: If the server says anything like "a large table just sat" or "the kitchen is busy right now but we'll get this out to you just as fast as we can, hun" if you are hungry you are better going elsewhere, the wait can be excruciating. Outdoor deck. Pool tables. Full bar.

Glenda Richburg has a great thing going on at Annie's, her homage to her grandmother's restaurant located in the same place. This is THAT place, where the clammers and the mayor and visitors and business owners (that's us) and everyone has breakfast and lunch and have since the beginning. Only about 1000 feet from the cottages, this is the nearest place to grab breakfast or lunch. This is like grandma's kitchen: nothing pretentious, just a perfectly constructed BLT, a grilled, smashed burger, perfect grits, fresh eggs cooked perfectly to your order, awesome biscuits and sausage gravy. This is quintessential Cedar Key. One of your servers, Peggy Sue, used to live on this property.

Drinks & Nightlife

Cedar Key is a small, rural, working waterfront town, and this colors the bar and nightlife scene. One of the easiest towns I have ever been in for pub crawls. Bars open long before sundown, and close not too long after. Bar managers will pull the plug early if business slacks, and so it's hard to know what will be open after 9-10 pm. Several local outlets offer a limited assortment of unremarkable liquor, wines and beer. Some must stops are Low Key Tiki Bar (for exceptional sunsets), Bonish Studios and Drink Emporium (excellent whiskey selection and conversation), the Sand Bar @ the Island Room.
Funky dunky doo! We love the Low Key Hideaway; it's where we landed our first night in Cedar Key. Mo and Frank and their eclectic mix of bartenders offer tropical drinks and beer and everything in-between from an open air tiki bar with glass bottle walls (must see), license plates, deep thoughts, and the best damn sunset view with a liquor license. Live music some nights. Afternoon hours and closes pretty early.

Local hang owned by the owner of the local market. Music sometimes, cheap drinks, nice servers. Grouper sandwich a winner. BBQ ribs are huge, and can be taken home to your cottage fridge for later.

城市觀光建議

不容錯過

Get out to Atseena Otie Key.

This island, only 1/3 mile from the city beach, is a remote slice of perfection. You can hop a water taxi (CK Island Tours), rent a kayak or canoe or John boat. Watch the wind and tides. Take insect repellent.
