Queen Anne Coffee Shops

Several excellent coffee/tea shops nestle into the neighborhood all within a half-mile of the Hermitage Queen Anne.
Just a couple blocks down the street, the Turkish coffee selections are quite unique, even in Seattle, plus a good selection of teas, pastries, sandwiches, and Turkish craft items.

We love strolling across the top of the hill enjoying all the houses, gardens, neighborhood parks and panoramic views along the way, then rewarding ourselves with a sweet little doughnut, coffee or tea. We often meet my sister here.

Jeanette had to think for a minute when I asked her about her favorite coffee shop and Milstead is why. Cross the Fremont bridge and turn left to find Fremont Coffee, or turn right to find Milstead. The true coffee lover really can't lose!

The yummiest little hole in the wall anywhere on the hill. You'll find their menu under a fridge magnet at the Hermitage Queen Anne. Call in your order, stroll up the street, and really great Mexican will be hot and ready for you to pick up. Enjoy the Virgin Mary shrine in a converted pay phone niche by the door.

Cross the Fremont Bridge and just keep going on to "Upper Fremont" and find Paseo. It's just a tin shack that nobody knows about unless somebody told them, but on a warm summer evening it's easy to spot by the line out the door and down the street.

Seattle Churches

Seattle was the original "none zone" with statistically the lowest church attendance in the country, yet beneath the apathetic surface vibrant spiritual communities thrive. Of course spiritual community demands some level of dedication and we can only vouch for a smattering of all the possibilities. Those who ask the right questions to the right people may unearth other vital connections.
Our longtime friend and the most challenging theologian of my personal acquaintance was recently called by the church just up the street, known for years as a place for engaging head to head conversation and entertaining and eclectic community music.

Not to be confused with any of the various "Apostolic" churches, "COTA" is an eclectic Christian liturgical community long supported by both the Northwest Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and the Diocese of Olympia of the Episcopal Church. COTA also has deep roots in the nascent days of the Emergent Church movement of a decade ago. Eucharistic Mass is held at 5pm on Sundays at the much beloved Fremont Abbey Arts Center (be sure and check out that entry on this guidebook as well). We find the experience to be a compelling mashup of ancient liturgy with the dynamic creative energy of the community, both ever changing and ever consistent.

9:30 to 10 every Sunday night "unchurched Seattle" descends on this barn-like monolith overlooking Interstate 5 and Lake Union to soak in the holy vibes of the all male Compline Choir. Ned first encountered this experience way back in the sixties and the phenomenon goes on stronger than ever. Bring a pillow and blanket, stretch out pretty much anywhere in the huge space, and just just lose yourself in the chant and the soul stirring anthems. You need only stand for the chanting of the creed. We also recommend dropping a fiver in the offering box on your way out.

Home base is up north in Greenwood, but the dinners happen in several locations around town. Ned drops in on occasion on a Wednesday night in Fremont. To the untrained eye this may look like a classic soup kitchen, but it really is a church. Just grab a little grub, let a local bend your ear for a while, and experience a bit of Christian art and folk music, plus some old style preaching. This is not at all like the Assembly of God churches I remember from decades past.

Exercise

There are plenty of wonderful bike rides, walks and runs around Queen Anne Hill and all over Seattle, in particular if you need a hills workout. Here are a few other options...

"The BG" is the original Seattle Rails to Trails project. At the bottom of the hill on the North the trail passes under the Fremont Bridge. The trail runs nearly 20 miles from Golden Gardens park to the west all the way to the wineries in Woodinville to the northeast where it links to the Sammamish River Trail where you can ride on south to Marymoor Park in Redmond and beyond.
