The Gower peninsula is located on the South Wales coast to the west of Swansea. It was designated as the UK's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1956. This long AONB status means that its splendid scenery has not been spoiled by overdevelopment and commercialisation. Gower is perhaps best known for its coastline and attracts water sports enthusiasts from all over the world. It is one of the United Kingdoms top destinations for surfing. The Gower Peninsula is ideal for the classic British, bucket and spade, seaside holidays it provides a large number of bays, beaches and coves in a relatively short coastline. It has an extensive waterfront promenade that stretches for 5 miles alongside the sandy shoreline of Swansea Bay to Mumbles head. The promenade follows the line of the old Mumbles Train railway that was the worlds first passenger carrying railway. The promenade contains a demarcated cycle path and jogging track with fitness apparatus. There are numerous access points onto the bay from the promenade and various visitor attractions along its length. In addition, Swansea has an abundance of award-winning public parks and gardens. Victoria, Singleton, Brynmill and Clyne parks are adjacent to the promenade. The village of Llanrhidian is located on the northern coast of the Gower peninsula overlooking the Loughor estuary and Burry inlet. The village nestles on the side of a limestone escarpment that leads down to the salt marsh. There are spectacular panoramic estuary views from various locations within the village. The centre of the village is located at the foot of the escarpment and is a designated conservation area. Located within the conservation area are some of the oldest buildings in the village. These include the Norman church, dedicated to Saint Rhidian and Saint Illtyd, The welcome to Town public house and the water mill. The surrounding landscape is primarily agricultural in nature. Llanrhidian is the parochial centre of the local area that encompasses a number of hamlets and remote farms. The 2001 census reveals that the parish had 207 households and a population of 537.
