First Time In Berlin

Sightseeing

These are some places you must see if you're first time in Berlin.
At the intersection of Zimmerstraße and Friedrichstraße, Checkpoint Charlie is still an impressive reminder of Germany's most famous former border crossing and the time of the Cold War. Today the wall has disappeared and the watchtowers and barriers of the former military checkpoint have been replaced by replicas, which are amongst Berlin's most popular photo themes. Experience the whole history in the Wall Museum or take a fast Trabitour along the former course of the Wall.

The scientific service center of the German Parliament is directly on the Spree. This new building, inaugurated in 2003, owes its name to the social politician and women's rights campaigner Marie Elisabeth Lüders. Alongside the Parliamentary Library and specialist scientific service providers, it also accommodates a Wall memorial open to the public. Parts of the Berlin Wall have been rebuilt here to commemorate the division of the city along the former route of the Wall. Together with the Federal Chancellory and Paul-Löbe-House, Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders House also forms part of "Federal Row", an architectural symbol of German unity.

While Germany was divided, the Oberbaum bridge was a border crossing for pedestrians. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, it now connects the two halves of the district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. The bridge with its great view is a popular sight for taking pictures.

On the border strip that had been located in East Berlin, an open-air exhibition uses the situation on Bernauer Strasse to explain the history of division. The memorial consists of the Monument in Memory of the Divided City and the Victims of Communist Tyranny as well as the Window of Remembrance. The grounds also include the Chapel of Reconciliation and the excavated foundations of a former apartment building whose façade functioned as the border wall until the early eighties.
