Food scene

We have never had a meal we didn’t love here; anything on their menu is an absolute delight! The staff is so friendly, and the building itself is part of the fascinating history of Galveston. Look for the marker on the wall next to the menu indicating the water level inside the restaurant during hurricane Ike. The indoor seating area is bright and inviting, displayed on the walls is the amazing art work of local artists available for purchase. Their dog-friendly outdoor patio area is cozy and inviting. We love their Turkey Divinity Sandwich with the Asian Noodle Salad. Our son loves their grilled cheese sandwich with bacon. Try their zucchini spice cake, it’s HUGE and to die for! Their French Toast with berries is absolutely delicious! Their unsweetened iced tea is really good. Between street parking and the additional parking behind the building, it's easy accessible. Locals and tourists love this place, so they get busy, especially during peak times and peak seasons.

Amazing breads and pastries. Local, made fresh on site and run by helpful and friendly staff. Highly recommend their Indian Grain Bread, especially if you appreciate European-type bread. Delicious cup cakes - try their zucchini spice cup cake; our son loves their Cookies 'n' Cream. Their Hamantashen and pecan tart are other favorites together with their zucchini bread.

Watch the video on The Texas Bucket List: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjmURazzi6I Not traditional tex-mex, but tex AND mex . Great Texas barbeque, especially their amazing ribs, brisket and smoked chicken. The mex consists of their hard to beat homemade tamales and charro beans. The one negative with this place is that they sell out by 3-4 pm, despite the fact it is referred to as "Galveston's best kept secret." And - it's located a stone throw away from the home you're staying in!

Beautiful restaurant on the Seawall with outstanding food and great ocean view! Huge menu offering almost anything you can think of, but our personal favorites include their incredible shrimp salad, chicken fried steak breakfast and shrimp quesadillas. Friendly service and a cozy, remodeled interior that is very pleasing to the eyes. During peak season, be prepared for a long wait (1 hour +) for a table, since locals and tourists alike just can't get enough of this place. We highly suggest after getting your buzzer, head across the street, and enjoy your time on the beach while waiting for your table. Parking can be somewhat of an issue, so prepare to be patient and willing to walk a little ways once parked.

Great location right on the Seawall with the best gumbo on the island, according to some of us. Delicious Po'boys and garlic cheese bread and beignets. For children who'll pass on the seafood that day, their Kid's Meal hamburger is a great alternative.

We love every aspect of this place for brunch - great menu items (boudin benedict, hearty hash) , great, inexpensive drinks (mimosas and Bloody Marys), friendly service, dog friendly patio seating right in the heart of the Strand district. We loved the time we spent at the Moody Gardens! The staff was very friendly, so willing to answer all of our questions and share their knowledge with us about the different creatures in the fish tanks. We learned so much about the different sting rays you might encounter while swimming in the ocean, and the ones they have on display at the Gardens. Our son was mesmerized by everything he saw and learned so much! The stingray encounter in the Aquarium Pyramid was such a gr eat experience with the stingrays acting more like lovesick puppies than untamed sea creatures. We loved the interaction with some of the animals (birds) we had in the Rainforest Pyramid. They casually walked around among the visitors, minding their own business. This seems to be a venue where the animals are truly well cared for. If you can visit the Moody Gardens on homeschool day, you can enjoy everything they have to offer for a very reasonable price.

Our Favorite Beaches

Starts at 61st. Great mix of people, family friendly, and not overly crowded even during peak season. Relatively easy to find parking, even during the busy months (June-August). Fresh sand, brought in in 2019 when the beach was widened. We highly recommend visiting the beach in late afternoon, early evening to swim, walk, relax and watch the sunset. The perfect way to round out the day; it makes for a good night's sleep listening to the sound of the ocean before returning home to go to bed.

Just shoot down 37th St from our home down to Seawall for a quick and easy access to one of our favorite beaches. Finding parking is normally not a problem (not even during peak season), family friendly and normally not overly crowded. Sharing this beach with locals and tourists creates a certain atmosphere; beach goers, joggers, walkers, dogs of all ages are all there to enjoy the ocean and the outdoors. All the amenities that the Seawall has to offer (grocery stores, convenience store, shops, restaurants, gas stations, ice cream shops) are conveniently located a stone throw away. Wind down watching the sunset, go for an evening swim, bring refreshments and a book or a magazine, and stay after dark before returning back to go to bed and you're guaranteed to get a good night's sleep.

Especially during the slow season, this beach feels more secluded than the beaches on the busier Seawall. The beaches at the north tip of the peninsula offer great opportunities for finding beautiful, large sea shells. The free ferry ride over is a delight in itself, with quite frequent dolphin sightings. You can drive your car, or walk aboard the ferry. Once on Bolivar Island, some sort of transportation is required to take you from the ferry to Crystal Beach. For driving and/or parking on the beach, a permit is required, and it can be obtained by the Sheriff's office. Please avoid the ferry and Bolivar Island during peak season (May-August), if you're not willing to spend 90 minutes in line waiting for the ferry to take you over to Bolivar Island. It's an incredibly popular place to visit by many, and the beaches can also get really crowded during the popular summer months. There are no grocery stores on Bolivar Island, and maybe a handful of restaurants, so please plan accordingly.

This very unique toy store is a gem and a must to visit! Very friendly service, in a beautiful setting, as the store is located in one of the historic, downtown, buildings with tons of character. They have everything in toys, and something to peak everybody's interest! Also - a selection of old arcade games on site for their patrons to play, so bring your roller quarters! Their Simpson's arcade game is a given destination spot for our family. Especially on rainy days, or when you feel the need to get out of the sun for a while, our son has put in a lot of time and effort into beating the record held by a previous player! For the person who is more interested in relaxing than playing, a couch is there for you to enjoy while you are waiting!
