Sightseeing

Valentia island is accessible by bridge at Portmagee or by ferry at Renard point which is 4k from our Farmhouse. There are numerous historical buildings in the main village connected to the transatlantic cable company. The Royal hotel has a colourful history and the food here is great as well. The slate quarry looks amazing as is the Cromwell lighthouse, the fossilized footprints of the first land animal Tetrapod can be seen in this area. There's a lovely walk on the other side, Bray tower with the Scellig Rocks at your feet. Days could be spent ambling through this wonderious island its probably the finest Ireland has to offer...

It's one of the few places where both the highest and second highest mountains in Ireland can be seen in a snapshot. A lovely safe walk with jaw dropping views of the skelligs and puffin island.

Ballinskelligs beach has a designated car park, a playground and a cafe with outdoor seating. The beach has breathtaking views all the way up to Carrontoohil, Irelands highest mountain. The water is shallow and safe for children. Nice walk nearby over to the Abbey. This was the home of the Skelligs monks after they abandoned the Great Skellig Rocks.

If you would like to get an idea of what old Ireland was like then this place is worth a visit. The road is narrow and steep, I wouldn't recommend it for the faint hearted but its landscape offers up a true untouched version of pre famine Ireland. The original famine village haa been restored and is used by visiting artists but beyond that is the real thing.

This is a pleasant Lunch stop off while doing the Sceilge Ring. Located just above a beach which is the only beach in Ireland that is looking out to the famous Skellig rocks. A gem of a place.
