Sightseeing
Valentia island is accessible by bridge at Portmagee or by ferry at Renard point which is 4k from our Farmhouse.
There are numerous historical buildings in the main village connected to the transatlantic cable company. The Royal hotel has a colourful history and the food here is great as well. The slate quarry looks amazing as is the Cromwell lighthouse, the fossilized footprints of the first land animal Tetrapod can be seen in this area. There's a lovely walk on the other side, Bray tower with the Scellig Rocks at your feet. Days could be spent ambling through this wonderious island its probably the finest Ireland has to offer...

Car parking facility at the start of your walk with picnic benches available to enjoy a spot of outdoor lunch after your walk, breathtaking views of the Kerry cliffs, Puffin island and the amazing Skellig Rocks. At the top there are lovely views of the blasket islands and Dingle.

Sceilge Michael is a UNESCO world heritage site. Boat trips can be organised from Portmagee to land on the rock alternatively there is the Scellig interpretive centre on Valentia island which offers virtual tours.

It's one of the few places where both the highest and second highest mountains in Ireland can be seen in a snapshot. A lovely safe walk with jaw dropping views of the skelligs and puffin island.

The road is narrow and steep, I wouldn't recommend it for the faint hearted but its landscape offers up a true untouched version of pre famine Ireland. The original famine village haa been restored and is used by visiting artists but beyond that is the real thing.
