Food scene

If Scarborough’s beaches are crowded then head to Filey. Filey’s sands are even more plentiful than Scarborough’s without any of the bustle. There is also the wonderfully odd-ball Scarborough Fair Collection on the outskirts of the town with its collection of old steam engines and some working rides. The Filey International Food Festival runs four weekends this year in June, August, October and November and in itself is worth a visit.

A quirky setting up steps in a warehouse on the Pier, this place has fabulous breakfasts, wonderful views, and is an out-and-out winner a mere stone’s throw away.

Oliver’s on the Mount Café Bar: This is something of a Scarborough institution and has wonderful views across the town as well as good food and drink.

Sightseeing

If you’ve never been to Whitby, then you must. And, if possible, visit Robin Hood’s Bay on the way. Wander round the cobbled streets, visit some art galleries, and (if you’re in Whitby) climb the steps to the Abbey and wonder at the views.

If visiting Pickering, be sure to take a trip on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. This steam heritage trail visits some of the most beautiful North Yorkshire villages including Goathland and Grosmont and accesses parts of the National Park not serviced by road such as Newtondale. Their Freedom tickets allow you to stop off along the way or spend some time in Whitby at the end of the route. You do need to book though, so plan ahead.

As an East Yorkshire lass I am passionate about this place. Flamborough Head has an other-worldly feel where the chalk hills of the Yorkshire Wolds hit the sea in spectacular style. Visit North Landing for rock pools and caves (check the tides) and walk along Bempton cliffs to see puffins, guillemots and seals. Sewerby village near Bridlington has a beautiful hall with adventure playground and gardens (dog friendly) and a renowned pub, The Ship. You might come across David Hockney!

The most accessible part of the North York Moors National Park from Scarborough is Dalby Forest. This has wonderful walking and cycling trails, picnic areas, children’s play areas and a ‘Go Ape’ centre. Most of these are located around the Visitor’s Centre at Low Dalby near Pickering but do explore the parts of the forest off the A171 to Whitby too. The villages and trails on the Eastern side of the forest are wonderful with some nice country pubs in places like Cloughton and Burniston.

There are several private cruise operators operating from the harbour offering trips along the coast to Cayton Bay and further afield to Flamborough Head or Robin Hood’s Bay. Most are in search of seals, dolphins and puffins, but the cliffs and coastal scenery are wonderful viewed from the water. Check online for Becca Marie Sealife Safari, Skylark Coastal Cruises and Queensferry Cruises and book ahead.

The castle and grounds are maintained by English Heritage and tickets can be booked online. The views are spectacular over both North and South bays and the history is fascinating. There is a nice café and shop too!

North Bay Railway and Peasholm Park. Easily walkable from the house (see walking routes above) there is loads to do at both venues. The Open-Air Theatre hosts a monumental series of rock concerts every summer, and there is an Adventure Sky-trail, dragon boats and - my personal favourite as a child – the tree walk. Sadly, the latter is no longer enlivened with magical flea circuses and lights, but the lake and glen remain lovely.
