Places & Spaces Around Our Cottage

Places & Spaces Around Our Cottage

Local Towns

The cottage is quite rural, located between two towns. About 20 mins north of cottage is Port Elgin, and 25 mins south is Kincardine. Both are filled with small town charm and really come to life during the Summer tourist season.
Port Elgin is a quaint beach town with the main beach and marina, about 15mins drive north of the cottage. The beach is large with volleyball courts, playground, and snack shack. In town there are lots of walkable storefronts and cafes. Lots of dining options and takeout (not many restaurants deliver as far as our cottage). As well as a couple major grocery stores (including a Walmart), LCBO, drugstore, etc.

For a more populated experience, Kincardine is a local hub. This beautiful town offers a large beach, pier, lighthouse, and lots of walkable shops and restaurants. Its about 20mins drive south of the cottage.

Local Restaurants

Because of our rural location, delivery is almost impossible. But we don't mind. Here are a few restaurants that we frequently visit, sometimes for eat-in, but mostly for takeout.
Our favourite takeout spot in Port Elgin! It doesn't look like much from the outside... but they specialize in international cuisine and it is delicious. My favourite is the vegetarian chickpea double, and my husband like the beef wrap. Yummm! (https://www.saffronportelgin.com)

Your local Port Elgin pub! If you're in the mood for a beer and a burger this is the place for you.

Located in Port Elgin, (in my opinion) this restaurant offers a quality step up on your regular pub fare. You may pay a little more, but the food is great. It also also a great patio for people watching and small local brewery attached for the full pub experience.

Located in the tiny town of Tiverton, this is a local favourite. Mostly pub fare, good wings, fast takeout service, and large portions! I really enjoy the turkey/avocado sandwich and my hub likes the spicy chicken sandwich. More info here: kingspearlpub.com

It's just like any other Boston Pizza you'd find anywhere in Ontario... But these guys have two beach volleyball courts attached to their patio! It's a great way to pass the time while waiting for your food!

Sightseeing

Most people come here for beaches and fun in the sun.... we certainly do! I've compiled a list of beaches we frequently visit in a separate guidebook, click here to view: https://www.airbnb.ca/s/guidebooks?refinement_paths[]=/guidebooks/3773435&s=67&unique_share_id=fa41f3ec-aa18-42d4-9102-d8dc4c091ae3...............but the suggestions here are a little more unknown to the usual beach loving-cottage goer and might make for some great rainy day activities!
One rainy afternoon we took our kids here (ages 3 & 5), and it was surprisingly fun. This little museum is a cute spot for younger kids offering hands on activities like sand dusting for fossils, a model ship you can walk around on and water table. it's no ROM, but very cute and had all the small town feels. Another rainy day option.... Hidden in the next bay over on the shores of Lake Huron is Bruce Power, (as of 2013) the worlds largest operating nuclear facility! They offer bus tours in the Summer. Pre-register on their website, as they fill up fast. it's a truly fascinating experience. Click here for more info: https://www.brucepower.com/in-the-community/visitors-centre/
