Hervey Bay is a playground stopover for the whales on their long trip south and are a 'must see' for anyone visiting our region during the whale season. The 'Blessing of the Fleet' and the Whale Parade is usually at the beginning of August and the season lasts for three to four months. The boats all leave from Whale Bay Marina, Buccaneer Drive, Urangan.

The Botanic Gardens are a hidden gem, set right in the heart of Hervey Bay. With lush lawns, large shady trees, a lagoon with bridge and viewing platform, a Chinese inspired formal garden and a nature playground for kids to explore, it has something for everyone and a lovely place to relax, maybe take a picnic. The Orchid House is open Monday to Friday 9-2.30 and a must see for lovers of these exquisite blooms. The Botanic Gardens are at 62 - 105 Elizabeth Street.

City/town information

Maryborough is about an hours drive from Hervey Bay and well worth a visit. It is a lovely old historic town with a Military Museum, a Heritage listed Government Bond Store, Gatakers Artspace, and of course the lady who made Maryborough famous, the Story Bank Mary Poppins Museum. Every year around July/August there is a Mary Poppins Festival. Every Thursday from 7am to midday is the very popular City Market, a good chance to check out the local produce. The Mary River runs right through the town and there are lots of walking tracks surrounded by beautiful gardens and plenty of seating to enjoy a picnic and the river views.
