Food scene

Our hands-down favorite for great pub food and excellent locally crafted beer. Don't miss the Imperial Coconut Porter, and our favorite appetizer, shishito peppers. A 5-minute drive- probably worth an Uber so you can enjoy. You can also purchase specialty brews, four packs, and six packs to take back to the condo and enjoy at sunset.

This full restaurant and little tiki bar is steps away from the condo (literally next door). Set your alarm for the daily 3pm happy hour and get mai tais for $5. Don't miss the poke nachos. Sounds weird, but they are incredible.

This breakfast place is a world-famous attraction. Beachside views and huge portions of breakfast comfort food and hawaiian style entrees. There will always be a line, but it's well worth the wait. Right next door to our condo!

Don't miss the market right down the street. It's famous for its fresh poke, which is often gone by lunchtime so get there early. The locals and tourists alike shop here, and it will likely have everything you need to stock the kitchen during your stay. Don't miss their deli. It's excellent.

This is an upscale restaurant in the next cove up from our condo. You can drive, or take a lovely walk along the beach around the point to the north. Very romantic. They often have live Hawaiian-style music during dinner.

This place is one of our favorites in Lahaina. It's across the street from the Banyan Tree, and is always bustling. They were one of the few open during the pandemic, and they barely missed a beat.

You just can't beat the view and the vibe of this touristy spot. It's inspired by Jimmy Buffett, and the music is right on par. Obviously, we recommend the cheeseburger. ;)

You simply MUST try Hawaiian shave ice while on Maui. It's not a snow cone! Imagine fresh powder snow, with the most amazing cremes and flavorings. Ululani's is the very best, and there's often a line. You won't regret it. (see our note in the condo guest book about why we love them so much).

City/town information

This will be your home. There is a reason why first-time visitors start in Kihei, drive to West Maui for a day, and then choose to stay in West Maui on all their future trips. It will make you feel like you're at home, just with a lot of Hawaiian locals. There is world class snorkeling, restaurants, and is the hands-down place to swim with turtles or just lounge on the beach or hike nearby. We may be biased- there's a reason this is our chosen home away from home!

Kaanapali is the closest town to Napili. It's got huge resorts like you'll see in guidebooks, and nice beaches to walk on. There is an upscale shopping mall, nice restaurants, golf, and places to catch a hula dance. It's a fun place to wander and get a different vibe than the laid back feeling of Napili and Lahaina.

This is by far the best town in all of Maui. It's historic, and offers walking tours and visits of its historic buildings. It's got shopping for everyone, food choices galore, and sunsets that are just magical. It's truly the best of what Maui has to offer.

This is the most touristy part of Maui. You'll find lots of shopping, activities, and restaurants. It's much more populated and full of visitors (and not many locals). In all honesty, we rarely go. We prefer the vibe of West Maui and the mix of locals and tourists. But they do have great activities and it's where you'll find dive boats and tours. We recommend the drive for a specific activity or destination, but not just to wander.

Wailea is south of Kihei, where you'll find some of the nicest resorts on the island. Beaches there are quite nice, and the restaurants are top notch (with prices to match). Last time we were at the Fairmont we saw Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson (that should tell you how long it's been since we've been down there).

This is where all the big-box stores are, and where you can go to stock up at Costco, WalMart, Target and the like. There are some cool local places, including Da Kitchen, which is truly local Hawaiian food.

Sightseeing

This is an all-day adventure you won't regret. We HIGHLY recommend downloading an app to your phone such as "Road to Hana Maui GyPSy". This app uses GPS (not cell reception) to guide you with local lore, stories, tips, and driving directions to truly maximize your adventure. It will turn on and talk to you like you have your own tour guide, and will be quiet in between sights. Nothing for you to do but relax and look out the window, and stop when you're inspired. Our kids were enthralled for the entire way when they were young. You'll be rewarded at the 7 pools at the turnaround point, but the journey is the real highlight, not the destination in our opinion.

This is a half-day trip up the volcano to the crater. It's a wonderful National Park with an out-of-this-world experience that genuinely feels like you are in outer space. There should be a map for the park in our guidebook in the condo showing all the hiking and exhibits (you can google it as well). Bring a jacket: the weather is way cooler at 10,000 feet and it's likely to be windy.

If you love snorkeling or diving, book a tour of Molokini Crater. There is a protected reef in the middle of the crescent shaped crater, and a wall you can dive on the back side. Tours usually include buffet breakfast, lunch, and all you can eat/drink. Appropriate for all skill levels.

This is the bay that's in your front yard. Bring a mask and snorkel (or just goggles if you're a swimmer like us), and swim with the honu (turtles). The honu are protected, and it's illegal to touch them. That's important to know, because they will literally swim right next to you and you'll need to back away. They are wonderful, gentle, beautiful creatures. This is why we love Napili best, and why we ourselves return here year after year.

This is the bay just next door to the north. You can walk there by walking along the water's edge. It's a different feel than Honokeanu with its white-sand beach and resort style feel. Lovely to visit for an afternoon of sunbathing.

Tips for reading Hawaiian words: pronounce all the vowels.

For example, Kaanapali is pronounced kah-ah-na-PA-li. Hawaii is actually pronounced hah-WAH-i (not ha-WAHY-ee like the haole say). Our street is Lower Honoapiilani, pronounced ho-no-API-eelee-AH-ni. Say that three times fast!

Best time to see the turtles

Turtles can be found all day in our cove, but the best time is morning time or an hour or so before sunset. They eat the goodies off the rocks/coral, and if you listen you can hear them chomping. They can spend several minutes underwater before they surface slowly for a breath. They are unafraid of you, but don't touch! They are protected by law. If you head out for a swim mid-day, you'll still see them. You just have to find them sleeping with their heads under rocks in the cove. We see the same ones year after year and we have our own names for them.
周邊交通資訊

Heading to the airport when you leave

Getting IN to Maui is generally really quick. But getting out on time can be a challenge. Security lines are often really long. Be sure to arrive at OGG two hours before your flight to account for those long lines. Don't end your wonderful Maui getaway with stress- we've learned that lesson the hard way!

Restaurant Reservations

New for 2021 is the post-Covid lockdown need for reservations (or long waits if you don't have them). We've had our home for over a decade and have never experienced these wait times until our last visit there in July 2021. But remember, if you must wait, just inhale the Aloha spirit and make some friends who are also waiting. It's all good in Maui.
