Food scene

Every time we have family visiting, a trip to the Saint John City Market is a must. It's also a great rainy day activity. You can buy food items to prepare a meal yourself or there are loads of places to grab whatever you're in the mood for. Lots of different international cuising options. On Saturdays there are extra vendors who aren't there during the week.

Another favorite destination when we have family visiting (and even when we don't). When the weather is nice, this Saturday morning market is usually hopping. Great place to support local farmers plus source a wide variety of baking, crafts, and more. Bonus: you get to take the free cable ferry across the river to get to the market. After the market, enjoy a drive around the scenic Kingston Peninsula.

This local brand of hard apple cider have a brand new building with a gorgeous view. There is a large dining room and outdoor deck for sampling the various ciders that are sold on the premises. This isn't a restaurant - they only sell some simple snack items. The cider is the "star" of the show.

If you're passing through Sussex or willing to make the 45-minute drive, Taste & See is a little gem of a restaurant in downtown Sussex. Ah-mazing salads and burgers. They're only open until 3 pm most days and closed Sundays & Mondays, so check they're open before making the drive. Everything is made from scratch and soooo yummy.

This place has the most amazing fudge flavors I've ever tried. They usually have at least 30 different flavors all made on site. This little local business keeps expanding and everytime I'm there seems to have something new on offer. They also sell homemade ice cream sandwiches and have a curated selection of local items for sale. This is another must-stop location if you go to Sussex. (We like to combine lunch at Taste & See with a visit to Cobbler's Lane.)

Sightseeing

This is a quick stop on my usual sightseeing tour with visitors. Hike to the top of the hill for a panoramic look at Saint John. Has a great view of Patridge Island in Saint John Harbour which is where all the immigrants first landed in Saint John.

A longtime favorite walking/nature destination for people from all over greater Saint John. There are many different trails of various lengths that go through marsh, forest, and along the ocean. You can also just drive the loop and still get treated to beautiful views. Lots of parking areas, picnic tables, and some BBQs. You could easily spend a half day (or even a whole day) here depending on how much hiking you want to do. There are also short hikes if you only have an hour or two.

This city street in Saint John is home to some gorgeous old Sea Captain houses complete with widow's walks where the wives could watch for their husband's return from sea. There's a small park partway almost in the middle with a view of the river, and the entrance to view the Reversing Falls links off of Douglas Avenue.
