Drinks & Nightlife

AUTHENTIC FRIENDLY LOCAL PUB. Live music on a Thursday. The Barley Mow is a pub on Castle Road with a super little beer garden at the back. Go through the second (left hand) door from the pavement to the lounge bar to access it - not the main door. They sell excellent fresh farm eggs for just £1 a half dozen. If you're lucky they might have a roll or do you one if you ask. They reserve the tables for the regulars so don't expect to be able to keep one all evening if there is music on, but there is no harm meant and I do very much recommend this pub. It's a "free house" too so has some very good beers. https://www.barleymowsouthsea.com/index.html On tripadvisor in June 2019 Bigmatt1724 reviewed it very comprehensively by saying... Best pub in town. This pub is a rare example of what a local pub should be (and they’re getting rarer thanks to the big chains who want to serve chavvy 20 somethings as much cheap lager as they can get down their necks) First off - it’s a friendly place. We use it all the time as our local and it’s a rare day we don’t end up chatting with a complete stranger. There’s never trouble here, your average lager lout has far more interest in the big retail sheds in town so they take one look at the Barley and walk on by. This is the sort of place you could walk in on your own, sit at the bar and suddenly find yourself in conversation with a regular like you’re a regular yourself. There are 8 ales on hand pumps for the real ale fans, a handful of lagers, draught and bottled, a good selection of spirits and wines, and they’ll even make you a coffee if you want one! There are numerous events through the year; Judy the Landlady puts on themed evenings for things like Eurovision, Chinese New Year, Easter, you name it. There’s a yearly charity fundraiser (“BarleyAid”) a quiz every Monday, live music every Thursday, and sometimes on Fridays / Weekends. There are notices everywhere with upcoming gigs and events, and yet it’s still possible to walk in sometimes to a quiet, almost empty lounge bar, and sit in the corner with the paper and a pint. There a meat raffle every Sunday, sometimes there are free nibbles on the bar, as the mood strikes; anything from a bowl of olives to a bowl of Judy’s roast spuds. There a reasonable selection of crisps and snacks, but the pub doesn’t do food as its main business; this is a proper community boozer, not a gastro pub. There are two parts to the pub; the lounge bar is entered via the door down the entrance hall facing onto Castle Rd; there’s plenty of seating, it’s carpeted, a radio is often on in the background providing unobtrusive music. There no Sports TV, so that crowd don’t come in, although they do drop the projector screen for the Rugby : Eurovision!! If you choose to go on a Thursday to see a band, they kick off at 9.00pm, but if you want a seat, get there early as it can get crowded. There’s a nice little beer garden out the back which Judy keeps looking lovely all year round. Occasionally she sells young tomato plants over the bar; they also sell fresh eggs very cheaply too. Sometimes you’ll find random items for sale, usually for charity, when someone has had a clear out! There’s also a Bar Billiards table this bar, one of only a small handful in Portsmouth. The public bar is on the other side of the pub, accessed by a door on the junction with Castle Road and St Edwards Road. The public bar is often empty and people make the mistake of turning round and walking away, but if you stand at the bar, the staff will see you on their CCTV and get to you as soon as they can. It’s quite ok to to call out “Hello” to let them know you’re there, as they can be busy in the main bar, but serve you they will. There is a jukebox in here (just ask for it to be turned on if it’s not) a dart board and a pool table. There’s little gaggle of chesterfield sofas at the far end, access to the garden and toilets at the other. The pub has quirky but homely feel to it, it’s walls are lined with 1940’s wood panelling, and decorated with all sorts of odds and ends. Nose around a bit further and you’ll find little humorous notices and oddities. There’s even a small library of second hand books you can borrow for a small charitable donation, and return when you’ve done for the next person to read. This really is a little gem of a pub; I almost want to keep it a secret, but really; do give it a visit, because it’s the last of a dying breed. It’s a bit like the bar in “Cheers”; everybody knows your name. To all the staff, and Judy especially: thank you for keeping a great pub great!!!

LUNCHTIME COFFEE OR A CIVILISED EVENING DRINK AWAY FROM ALL THE WEEKEND HUBUB. Lovely ambience. The chandeliers and pictures give it a French feel. Good coffee but make sure they warm the cups before so it's nice and hot. For a beer I recommend the draught "Punk". They're open in the evening too.

Lovely spot on Southsea Common. You can see the ships going by and the Hovercrafts coming and going.

BUTTERFLIES ON YOUR SHOULDER. May to September. Following extensive redevelopment, The Butterfly House is now open! We have a huge array of neo-tropical butterflies, including swallowtails, morphos and owl butterflies. There is also the puparium where pupae are kept during their metamorphosis. The butterflies aren't the only thing to see, though, as there is a host of plant life within the greenhouse, including orchids, jasmine, banana, lemon trees and lantana. These aren't there to look pretty, however, but provide much-needed shade for the butterflies and food for the caterpillars. They've even become places for the happy butterflies to lay their eggs. Please note: butterfly season is May - September.

TAKE A LONG ROMANTIC WALK ON THE BEACH. When you think of romantic things to do with someone you love, walking on the beach is probably on the short list. Three things make strolling on the beach such a great way to connect with your partner: Beauty. The beach is a change from the workplace, home, and screens most of us look at most of the time. We also have a primal connection with water and long views. It’s just pretty by the sea. Your eyes are pleased, which lifts your spirits and creates a happier mood. Intentionality. When you go to the beach to walk with your honey, it’s not something you have to do. You’re making a choice to spend the time together. Focused attention. This is the most important element. When you’re walking together, it’s just the two of you. You’re not doing some task or on your device. (If you are, you’ve blown the relational benefit.) You’re talking to each other and really listening, or just enjoying companionable silence. You are together.

The Wedgewood Rooms is a venue in Southsea renowned for presenting up and coming artists, and hosting some unique intimate gigs. It has a capacity of 450-500 people and is located on Albert Road in Southsea. In recent years it has hosted events from up-and-coming British pop and rock artists including You Me At Six, Kasabian, Mercury Prize winners Klaxons and Travis. It has also become a favourite venue for artists wishing to play more intimate venues, such as Renegades and Bowling For Soup, as well as one-off and warm-up shows for many bands. The Wedgewood Rooms is also affectionately known as ‘The Wedge’. It regularly hosts local band nights which help give these bands a wider fan base and a leg up on the music ladder. It also holds comedy nights and tribute nights where many tribute bands have played including The Jamm and the Silver Beatles. The venue holds regular club nights including ‘Club NME’. This cool independent venue was named by GIGWISE as one of their top 50 venues in the UK and has been host to many great music and comedy acts throughout the years. Arnold Schwarzenegger even graced the venue when it was formerly a function room back in the 60s.

TAKE A STROLL AROUND OLD PORTSMOUTH. In Old Portsmouth, the cobbled streets are lined with historic homes, traditional pubs and quaint tea rooms. The historic Portsmouth Harbour area is a world away from its old incarnation as a hive of vice and debauchery - now it's an ideal place to experience the quiet life. Explore the Camber Dock and ramparts, or even see the home of Ben Ainslie Racing (Land Rover BAR), before indulging in some home-cooked food at a pub overlooking the Solent. Sip wine alfresco in the summer or enjoy a coffee by a cosy fire in the colder months - it's an ideal spot for couples, dog owners or those after a break from the city hubbub.

The Castle Road area is one of the oldest surviving parts of Southsea. The oldest building is probably 17a Castle Road which dates back to 1790. Castle Road and Great Southsea Street have always formed a minor shopping centre with a wide variety of shops and small business uses. There has been a gradual loss of such uses (perhaps especially in Great Southsea Street) usually followed by residential conversion. Castle Road has several lovely eateries such as Pie & Vinyl, Monty’s and Sant's. Events are held down it throughout the year, such as "Record Store Day". Wandering the genteel streets of Southsea, you might be forgiven for thinking that the clock tower on the corner of Castle Road and Great Southsea Street is a Tudor-era treasure. However, this is not the case - as it was built in 1903 in a mock-Tudor style. Indeed, if you look on the tower’s eastern side, you’ll be able to see the true date of completion. The tower’s name derives from its first landlord, cabinet maker Ernest Smith. Over the years, the building became one of the first car showrooms on the south coast, survived the Blitz and is currently a hairdressers.
