Rugged rainforest-clad mountains and gorges, tumbling waterfalls, varied wildlife, easy access and a fascinating history make Barron Gorge National Park one of Queensland’s most popular parks. Its all accessible right from the front door! There are many guide books showing the wonderful walks that are found in this beautiful national park that we are part of. Here is one link for the walks nearby visit the website Alltrails and look for Barron Gorge National Park. Here are two of the most popular walks... Glacier Rock Lookout (Leaving from the Stoney Creek Car Park) Enjoy this 6.8-km out-and-back trail leaving from Stoney Creek Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 2 h 44 min to complete. This is a popular trail for birding, hiking, and walking, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. Great variety in this walk, rainforest, creeks and nice views. It is worth the effort to start early or go late to avoid the heat on the climb which is decent, and this means you could also catch a sunset or sunrise from the top. It is an undulating well-signed rainforest walk that features dense vegetation of the Barron Gorge National Park. The walking trail networks in this region were formed by the Djabugandji Bama traditional owners, who developed trails that linked the coasts to highlands. As Alicia P says ...Very manageable hike for all levels of experience. Lots of steep sections but they were broken up by flats in between. If you want to see the Kuranda train go past, we saw it at approximately 10:45am. Amazing views from the top and the swim at Stoney Creek was well earned at the end! Stony Creek Weir Track Discover this 1.8-km out-and-back trail leaving from Stoney Creek car Park. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 30 min to complete. This is a popular trail for hiking and walking, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. if you just want to enjoy the swimming under the waterfall with minimal walking you can drive from the front door to the Stoney Creek Car park, less than a kilometre and then walk less than three hundred metres, all the waterfalls are located to the left side of the track- a popular locals secret, yet easy to find! Follow the Weir Track out to the end and back as you meander along Stony Creek. You can also get advice from the official website at Queensland Department of Environment and Science

Sky rail is just a five minute trip away it’s our local close attraction and for years voted as Cairns number one attraction. You can travel both ways on Skyrail and it gives you the flexibility to come and go as you like from the beauty of Kuranda. Don’t miss out on the midpoint stop where you can take a walkway amongst the treetops and look out for the beauty and wondering aboutriver falls on the the way.

This trip is amazing you can actually purchase it with a journey up on the train and back on the sky rail which is our recommendation as the sky rail gives you the flexibility to come back at any time you want and the operators will provide a shuttle bus service back to the railway station at Freshwater We recommend getting on the railway station at the quaint stop of Freshwater This famous railway winds its way on a journey from Cairns to Kuranda, the village in the rainforest, with Freshwater situated along the line with views of the surrounding mountains. Rising from sea level to 327 metres, the journey to Kuranda passes spectacular waterfalls and into the stunning Barron Gorge. The journey includes an English commentary and all passengers receive a commentary companion which includes information on the history of the railways construction, a trip map and a map of Kuranda. Upon reaching the village of Kuranda a rich assortment of interesting attractions and unique shopping experiences awaits you.

Definitely for our thrill-seeker visitors this one never disappoints and it is one of the longest running local attractions that’s continued to deliver fun and excitement for all. Just minutes from our front door this wonderful attraction has continued to grow in interest. Definitely worth planning part of your time to be here This Aboriginal Cultural Park is located in Smithfield at the base of the Skyrail cableway, showcases the 40,000-year-old Aboriginal culture through dance and song. It is both an entertaining spectacle, and an educational experience for everyone. The park is set on 25 acres and combines the latest in theatre and technology. There are interactive tours and activities with Aboriginal people who teach authentic traditional culture and customs. Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park prides itself on its authenticity. The Tjapukai people inhabited the tropic region that extends from Cairns to Port Douglas and inland to Kuranda. Their name means ‘People of the Rainforest'. The displays and cultural dances within the park portray the Dreamtime through to the present reality of today's Tjapukai people. What to see The Magic Space is a museum that houses artifacts once used by the Tjapukai people up to 40,000 years ago. The Creation Theatre is where live actors interact with giant holograms to retell the spiritual and traditional beliefs of the Tjapukai people. This performance, one of the most popular at the park, is told in the Tjapukai language but the audience can use personal headsets and hear the story told in any of 7 languages. The History Theatre is a small movie theatre playing a 20-minute presentation. This theatre recounts the history of Aboriginal people in the last 120 years. It discusses the effects of modern man's impact on the 40,000-year-old culture. This presentation can be confronting to some people whom are unaware of how the Aboriginal culture has been affected by European settlers. The Dance Theatre is a live performance set outdoors, celebrating traditional Tjapukai corroborees and songs. The Tjapukai Camp is where visitors can throw a boomerang, play a didgeridoo and sample bush foods with the Tjapukai people. The Gallery houses artwork, artifacts and souvenirs. The Boomerang Restaurant is an air-conditioned 5-star buffet restaurant, with an emphasis on native foods.

Accessible form the front door- A reasonably steep climb (in places), but, not extreme. Follow the track and it doesn't take too long - you need to be fit and capable of walking 10k > The view from Glacier Rock itself is an excellent reward for the climb. There are other good lookout views as well, in places during the climb. Also, differing vegetation. Can also walk at Stoney Creek Falls, and see the remnants of the old railway workers camp. Red Bluff is impressive when you are up close. Start the base of Stoney Creek, l, it's challenging, but soo worth it! Took my partner and I about 2.5 hours roundtrip including photos at the top.. The view at the top is stunning. Go early in the morning on a clear day, as it gets quite hot, then spend a few hours at the swimming holes afterwards for a much deserved and needed cool off! Make sure to wear a hat, bring your bathers, lots of water, some snacks, and bug spray! make sure you follow the advice here https://parks.des.qld.gov.au/parks/barron-gorge/about

Ok this is a little more extreme but a whole lot of fun. The River that we look over - The Barron, is also home to some fabulous white water rafting. There are two main rafting rivers in Cairns - The Tully and the Barron River. The Tully River is a full day trip with rapid grades ranging from 1 - 4. The Barron River is a half day trip more suited to beginners, those who are a little less confident in the water, families, or those short of time.

Take your towel, relax on the beach, climb up to the Lighthouse- such a fun day. Fitzroy Island is located twenty-nine kilometres south-east of Cairns, with transfers taking only 45 minutes by high speed ferry. One of the most unspoiled islands on the Great Barrier Reef, the majority of Fitzroy Island is National Island Park - this includes mangroves, open woodland, tropical pristine rainforest and coral beaches with fringing coral reef best experienced by the walking trails around the island.

This is one of our very favourite places to meet it’s not often you get to put your feet in the sand and have a cup of coffee. This quaint roadside cafe has been a locals favourite for years the beautiful hand carved wooden tables where you are right on the edge of Holloways Beach are incredible. There’s also a safe and closed swimming area just metres away from the cafe so certainly a place where you can plan to have a swim in the ocean and a wonderful coffee right on the beach hence the name " Strait on the Beach" A unique, relaxed, beachfront, dining experience. Fantastic menus - Breakfast & lunch all day till 4pm. Alcoholic drinks served from 10am. Live music every Saturday (3-6pm) is the highlight of the week. This is a must do trip for all visitors but it comes with a warning watch out for the weather not in a negative way but with a little bit of planning you can choose the best weather day and have an amazing trip to the reef. We have helped more than 1000 visitors take advantage of this and we love to weather watch so plan your trip with us don’t pay a cent more but allow us to take the head out out of choosing the best weather day.

Car hire

Sometimes car pricing can be at an extraordinarily high level. Why? During Covid some of the rental companies sold a lot of stock. Now with more tourism that stock is no longer available and daily rental rates are way up. With improved Internet apps people hire their own cars and you can go to sites like “Car Next Door”. As an experiment we put in a five day rental over the Easter weekend just two weeks from Easter 2022 to see what was available. Plenty of stock from $50 a day. Comparatively little stock with the major rentals at 5 times the price.

My background is as an international airline captain and that means I have been on nights stops and trips around the world for more than 30 years. Reusable Ziploc lock bags are my favourite travel kit. So easy to see them all - use one each for your medications, electronic gadgetry, Favourite snacks, coins, hair products, toiletries, Sunscreens and insect spray and put your phone in them when you go to the beach!

Being a regular packer with 30 years of international airline trips I learnt this technique. Save space and save Ironing ( If you need an iron or for that matter any laundry items we have them at our homes) The best way to prevent creases and make the most of your space is to use the roll method. Lay tops facedown, fold in the sleeves and roll from the bottom up. For pants, put the legs together and roll from the waist down. Once you’ve rolled everything, place pants and tops in your suitcase before shoes and accessories; then, fit in other oddly shaped items! Like your ziplock bags

Page Turner # 1

Okay I love a good holiday read - has to be a page turner - why? Page turners are the best - keeping you glued to the pages waiting to find out what’s next. Where the Crawdads Sing For years, Kya Clark has survived alone in the marshes of the North Carolina coast. Dubbed “The Marsh Girl” by the locals, she raises herself in nature after her family abandons her. Now, as she comes of age, Kya begins to yearn for something more than her loneliness. Maybe even a connection with the locals. An exquisitely written tale, Where the Crawdads Sing is one of the best recent page-turners to enjoy.
