Museum

Touring Moody Mansion is among the most popular things to do in Galveston, a restored historic home listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of the Interior since 1994 and a Recorded Texas Historical Landmark since 1967. This restored Galveston house museum is open to the public daily for tours. Guests are welcome to tour the two main floors of the historic Moody Mansion, furnished in a variety of styles ranging from French Rococo to Classical Revival. All furnishings are original to the Moody family.
Restored to its turn of the century splendor, this 28,000 square-foot, four-story Galveston historic home was completed in 1895. The home has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of the Interior since 1994 and a Recorded Texas Historical Landmark since 1967. Today, our guests visit 20 rooms on a tour that depicts the home life of a powerful Texas family. The Moodys established one of the great American financial empires. Based on cotton, it grew to include banking, ranching, insurance, newspaper publishing, railroading and hotels. W.L Moody Jr. bought the Galveston Broadway mansion from the heirs of the original owners soon after the Great Galveston Storm of September 8, 1900. It was designed by British architect William H. Tyndall and decorated by the world-famous interior design firm of Pottier & Stymus of New York. Mr. and Mrs. Moody and their four children celebrated their first Christmas in the house in December of that year, just three months after the 1900 hurricane. The house remained home for Moody family members until 1986. Today, its rooms are filled with the furnishings and personal effects of the family. The philanthropic legacy of the Moody family of Galveston is carried on today by the Moody Foundation and the Mary Moody Northen Endowment. Both charitable foundations are major forces in health care, education, historic preservation, and the arts. Just 1.2 mi from us. LOCATION: 2618 Broadway – Galveston, TX 77550 Mansion Hours: Open 10am to 5pm 7 days/week (last tickets sold at 4pm).

Galveston Historical Foundation (GHF) board, staff and the volunteer crew of ELISSA are saddened at the loss of a fellow volunteer and staff member. The accident is still under investigation by authorities and GHF is conducting its own internal review. ELISSA is a crew of dedicated men and women who operate the ship with passion and dedication. We extend our condolences to the crew member’s family and friends. ELISSA is one of the few historic tall ships in the world that still sails. Volunteers are trained under an extensive program. Galveston Historical Foundation rescued the 1877 tall ship in the 1970s from a shipyard in Greece and restored it for sailing and as a visitor attraction at Pier 22. The vessel is maintained and interpreted by volunteers and staff and undergoes routine inspections by the US Coast Guard as a Sailing School Vessel and a periodic required drydock. GHF is a 501(c )3 non-profit organization founded in 1871 as the Historical Society of Galveston that merged in 1958 with another entity to become the Galveston Historical Foundation. The organization owns and operates more than twenty historic sites and vessels. Its mission is to preserve the history, architecture, and maritime history of Galveston Island.

Long ago pirates roamed the seas of the Atlantic and the Caribbean, many made their way to the Gulf of Mexico sailing to the Yucatan, and eventually to the shores of Louisiana and Texas. One of the most famous pirates to sail the Gulf also made Galveston his home for a period of time. Jean Lafitte, a Frenchman of questionable values, took New Orleans by storm, help defend our nation under Andrew Jackson's command in the Battle of New Orleans, then sailed away from the shores of Louisiana settling on a magical island....Galveston. The Galveston County Museum opened to the public in 1976. In 1972, Mary Moody Northern donated the former City National Bank building at 2219 Market St. to Galveston County for use as a historical museum, dedicated to the memory of her father, W. L. Moody Jr. For the next thirty years, this location served visitors as the hub of Galveston County history. September 2008 brought with it the destructive forces of Hurricane Ike. Although the artifact collections and exhibits were not harmed in the storm, the building’s electrical and air systems were severely damaged. In March 2021, after a complete renovation and COVID19, the museum exhibit hall opened back up for public viewing. The Galveston County Museum offices are currently located in the County Courthouse, 722 Moody, Galveston, 77550. At more than 10 miles long and 17 feet high, Galveston’s seawall is the longest continuous sidewalk in the country and the world’s longest mural. Today, the iconic Seawall Boulevard is a happening place for beachgoers and serves as a gorgeous backdrop to a variety of shops, restaurants, attractions and gear rental stores—but this was not always the case. After the Great Storm of 1900 leveled Galveston, its resilient community devoted years of effort to raise the island and build the protective seawall that stands here today. Now, runners, cyclists, skaters and surrey riders decorate the seawall, inviting visitors to join in the fun.
