The most famous is the Cathedral of St. Tryphon. Although it was built on the foundations of an older church from IX dedicated to the new patron saint of the city, Sv. Tryphon, the year 1166 is considered the year of consecration of the altar of the present Romanesque cathedral. Although this building has suffered significant damage in four major earthquakes, it has existed for almost nine centuries.

One of the most interesting parts of the old Town of Kotor is definitely the fortress of St. John (venet. San Giovanni). It is better to take the whole day (or at least half a day) to visit a fortress. If you face the mountain, under which the Old Town of Kotor is located, and look up, you will see an amazing ancient building - an extended fortress wall, whimsically winding along the slope. This is the very fortress on the walls of which made the majority of photographs advertising Montenegro on numerous tourist leaflets. A wall over 4 km long was built, rebuilt and strengthened from the 9th to the 19th century. The viewing platform (one of the extreme points) of the fortress of St. Ivan is located at an altitude of about 280 meters above sea level! You can climb only on foot in several ways: through the Old Town of Kotor, by stone stairs or along an old mountain path outside the city. The path is rather complicated and tedious, but the time and effort spent are worth seeing with your own eyes the breathtaking panorama of the Bay of Kotor. On your path to the top you will also see church Lady of Remedy, it became a votive church after one of the many plague epidemics. It was built in the middle of the ascent to the hill of St. John, below the Small Fortress.

If you travel by car you can enjoy fantastic panoramic views if you decide to go in direction of Cetinje (the old capital city of Montenegro) by old Austro Hungarian road called "Sepentine". The road is very narrow and curvy, but as you go higher the view is just more stunning. On the 25th curve there is the best view on Kotor bay.

Our Lady of the Rocks is one of the two islets off the coast of Perast in the Bay of Kotor. It is an artificial island created by bulwark of rocks and by sinking old and seized ships loaded with rocks. The Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Rocks is the largest building on the islet; it has a museum attached. There is also a small gift shop close to the church and a navigation light at the western end of the islet. According to legend, the islet was made over the centuries by local seamen who kept an ancient oath after finding the icon of Madonna and Child on the rock in the sea on 22 July 1452. Upon returning from each successful voyage, they laid a rock in the Bay. Over time, the islet gradually emerged from the sea. The custom of throwing rocks into the sea is alive even nowadays. Every year on the sunset of 22 July, an event called fašinada in the local dialect, when local residents take their boats and throw rocks into the sea, widening the surface of the island, takes place.

Our Lady of the Angels Church is located on the isthmus called Verige, right across the city of Perast. The church belongs to the municipality of Tivat. Among the locals, this church bears the name Our Lady of Oriz, coming from Italian word “soriso” which means “a smile". The sailors, when returning from long journeys and sailing into "their waters," would laugh with joy. The first thing they would actually see was this small church on the rock. And this is how the church got its local name. Verige in local dialect means "chains" and this is where cruisers that sail to the port of Kotor pass. There is a small beach bar near the church, with a pebble beach. From this place it is very easy and fast to cross from one side of the coast to the other - the width of the "Chain" passage is only 250 meters. In history from this place, people would lift iron chains and stretch them out of the sea, when it was necessary to block the enemy ships from entering the interior of the Bay. Hence the current name for this isthmus is Chains.

With an achingly romantic setting, extremely upmarket Galion gazes directly at the Old Town across the millionaire yachts in the marina. Fresh fish is the focus, but you'll also find steaks, risotto and pasta. It usually closes in winter.

Lots of sun, many springs and mild climate of this area, probably influenced the origin of the name of Dobrota, which in Serbo-Croatian means goodness. Dobrota is known for its captains’ houses, which surrounded by “emerald waters and soaring mountains rival anything in the Italian lakes” The oldest preserved monument is the Church of St. Elijah from the 11th century, built on the cliff next to the present-day Marine Biology Institute. Another significant church is St. Matthew, erected in 1670 on the foundations of an older, 13th century church. St. Matthew stores Bellini’s Mother of God with Child, but also paintings and sculptures of the Venetian 17th and 18th century School, as well as a rich collection of textile, silver and golden relics, particularly rare of which is the relic of Christ’s Blood from the 16th century. The Church of St. Eustace, had originally been built on the seashore, in the 14th century. However, the present-day church was erected in 1773, the interior of which is a typical example of Baroque art, with the paintings of the famous masters: Paolo Veronese, Carlo Dolci, Ivan Soliman, Frano Potenza, and the main altar made of Carrara marble. The Church treasury stores a rich collection of relics, church robes, paintings of famous authors, and a particularly rich collection of Dobrota lace, which is proposed for UNESCO cultural heritage list.

周邊交通資訊

The best way to get to know the city is on foot.

Although there are local buses and taxy service which is not too expensive, Kotor is small town and you can walk easily from apartment to beach, old town and churches, walk along the street "Donji put" by the sea and enjoy beautiful old houses, churches and lot of restaurants and bars. That way you can avoid traffic yams and fully enjoy historic ambient. If you would like to visit places like Prcanj, Perast, Risan a car, taxi or public transport would be good choice.
